Insanity

It is said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. This, in a nutshell, describes my deer hunting season. Day, after day, after day, I set my alarm for 5:45 and go to bed. But I do not really need the alarm, my body is like a finetuned watch. Sadly, it is not tuned like a Rolex, it is like a 1970's Mickey MouseTimex that has been dropped in the water. Instead of my alarm going off at 5:45, my internal alarm clock goes off at 3:45! I kid you not, 5 out of 7 days a week I wake up within 5 minutes of 3:45, the other two days, if I am lucky, it will be after 5am, but never does my phone alarm actually go off.

I then sit on the couch, have my caffeine and watch the news as my body wakes up. A half hour or so before sunrise, I walk to my blind sit down and watch the sunrise. Day, after day, after day, after day. Oh, I am not complaining, it is a great way to spend the morning. Okay, maybe I am complaining a little bit as we did have two days where the highs were in the teens.

Did I see deer? I see deer every day. Did I see bucks? I see bucks every day. Did I shoot a deer? No. With two weeks left in the season, I have come to the conclusion that I probably will not get a deer this season.

Then came Thursday and our world stopped with a phone call. Our niece Alana, who I have talked about many times had a medical emergency. We dropped everything to rush to Rapid and be with her and Ryan. Alana's sister Tess drove up from Denver, her mom and dad flew in from Minneapolis, and her brother flew in from Paris.

She is not out of the woods yet, but we are seeing positive signs. It has been almost a week, and it will likely be another week before she can go home, but we are hopeful.  We went to their house and picked up their dogs who will be spending a few days with us.

And just like that, we went from a 2-dog household to a 4-dog household! Let the chaos begin! Feeding times are the worst, Loki is three years old(ish), but a lab, and they take several years to settle down. Most of the time he is fine and just lays around, but other times the pup in him comes out and the chaos begins.

Loki thinks he is a lap dog which is often sweet, sometimes annoying. How many pups do you see in this picture?

Barb is reading her iPad, but the dogs want some attention, and Loki gives her a big kiss!

So, just for you Harry, here is a video of the dogs playing. Those little ones have jaws of steel!

Dakota just hangs out, not wanting anything to do with either of the other dogs. She has been having a hard time getting around, as her hips are super weak. We give her injections which seems to help. Her mind is happy, you can see it in her eyes, ears and actions when we go for walks, but the struggle is real for her.

Life is weird, the world can totally stop for one person, or family, as the rest of the world goes on like it is just a normal day. I know all of you have experienced it, some of us more times than we like to recall. Each time, I just find it surreal; as you watch others going about laughing, working, living life as though nothing has happened at all while you walk around in a stupor barely able to function. But even for us, life goes on and we feel guilty for it. I still work on the garage, Barb still works on the camper, we still watch football. We go up there every other or every few days to visit, but in a nutshell, life really sucks sometimes.

Speaking of the garage, I am still working on the OSB in the workshop. I borrowed Kevin's sheetrock lift to do the ceiling. Talk about a back saver! I got the last piece up on the ceiling and should have the last of the wall pieces up in the next day or two.

I have also been wiring the new fuel tank Bob and DeAnne brought down. I had it filled with 250 gallons of gas the other day, so I hope I get it going soon! (Update...I finished this project yesterday and it is all good to go!)

Barb has been trimming the edge of the flooring, tedious work. She struggled on what to do with the rounded corners and after many trial and errors she came up with this solution: a 45° piece sandwiched between two 22° pieces.

The weather has been a roller roaster, from snow and single digits to mid 50's in just a few days. All of our snow is gone now, but just two days ago it looked like this. So beautiful.

A couple of you asked for a picture of the Christmas tree after it was all decorated, so here it is.
It does not look like this anymore, however. Saturday night, Barb and I were having a quiet evening on the couch watching a Hallmark movie, when all of a sudden there was a 15' tree laying on top of us. No warning, no one shouting "timber!". Just a tree on our heads. Barb was trapped under the tree. I was able to get out from under it and lift it off Barb. Water everywhere, broken bulbs everywhere, dogs everywhere barking and confused. I tried standing it up, but with the water, the stand just slid across the floor. Barb came over to help and stepped onto a broken bulb. We finally got it standing back up and started the cleanup.

What happened? We don't know for sure, but Loki was back there when it happened, and we think he got tangled up in the lights. The dogs went back home two days later. With everyone staying at Ryan and Alana's house there is plenty of people there to take care of them now.

That was our week, not a good one, but I write this blog as a journal of our life, so I write it as it is so years from now our kids, grandkids or even us, ourselves and look back and read about it and reflect.

  1. I understand about the weather being a roller roaster. Yep, I sure do. Last weekend was negative 16 below to yesterday's 44 above. That really is a roller roaster as you say.

    1. You can keep your negative temps and snow there thank you. We would like a little snow but not feet worth!

    2. Me thinks that sometimes you like to talk like Scooby Doo. Root ro Shaggy, roller roaster ahead.

  2. Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your niece Alana, sending prayers and get well wishes.
That is spooky having the Christmas tree fall on Barb. We are having colder than normal temps, lows in the single digits with the wind chill. It is supposed to warm up tomorrow. We will wait and see. My body clock is up at 3:30, I wake up to take hubby around 4:30 to go to dialysis three times a week. I love all the cute doggies photos and the frosty images. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.

    1. It would probably help if did not go to bed so dang early. But that is the way it is this time of year!

  3. Oh no about the Christmas tree. We had one that fell once, and it is a BIG mess. And so sorry to read about Alana. I hope she recovers fine. Yup, I have 2 lab mixes and I know all about them. Ha ha about the lap dog(s). They're just trying to keep you warm, right? I'm glad that last summer's fawn and mom that occasionally came to visit my yard are still ok and didn't get shot. She's such a good Mom and the now getting bigger fawn is still playful. I'm OK with deer hunting, but these 2 have kind of become special to me, watching the little one get bigger. Once summer comes and they invade my garden I'll probably change my mind. Merry Christmas to you and your whole family.

    1. We are protective over our does and fawns as well. We have a doe and two fawns that are pretty tame and just stare at us and the dogs when we go outside.

  4. Sending prayers Alana recovers quickly. Oh my ... four dogs. Maybe not quite as bad if they were all the same size! Love the video!! So when a tree falls in the living room there is no TIMBER?? Yeah, I laughed at that one!! Life does go on I guess, sometimes good, sometimes not so good.

  5. It must be nice to be so picky when you’re seeing bucks on every hunt and you say you may get skunked this season! Hopefully your niece is on her way to a full recovery. That must have been quite the scare when your Xmas tree toppled over.
Merry Christmas and all the best to you both in 2026!

    1. Skunked as in not getting a chance at the big one. That would make two years in a row! But I want something bigger than anything else on the wall so there is that. 2026 is going to be a great year!

  6. I know that disjointed, surreal, heart in your throat feeling all too well.
Those dogs kept you on your toes, that's for sure. The tree falling on you guys--OMG!
I pray everything works out well. Best to you all!

    1. It is sad that we have to go through that, but without love and those feelings what would life be? Really makes you appreciate and look at things differently.

  7. i have a thought, perhaps you were not meant to get a deer this year. one died here at my house, you remember, so perhaps one was spared at your house because of it. we have not had a "live" tree since the boys left, they are 42 & 43. BUT we have had many "tree" experiences like yours. we have no pets...and no idea why our trees fell. we started tying the tree to the handle of the sliding glass door it was in front of, that worked!!! you are brave people having 4 dogs at one time. if you are in fact keeping this real you are a great man to watch a hallmark movie, i do not enjoy those, enough said. i REALLY wish alana well, and hope she gets home soon!!

    1. You deer encounter was so tragic. I have had to do what that police officer did a couple times in my life. Usually helping someone else out along side of the road. Still sad and not something I enjoy doing.

  8. Wow! Sorry about your niece. Hopefully she gets well soon. Your poor tree! It did look beautiful. Ray has always tied the top of our tree to the ceiling or wall with fishing line in 2 directions, to prevent that from happening. We have always had dogs in the house and of course the past 4 years with Amelia. This year is the first year we have not .... maybe we should just in case.

    1. I guess we should look into tying it and securing it, but with only a week left and Loki gone, we are going to take our chances.

  10. Life can change in the blink of an eye; we need to always find the best in every moment we have. With all the Christmas cheer everywhere, it's important to be thankful for what we have, when we have it.
Your tree is (was?) beautiful! We don't worry about ours anymore, but when we lived at the farm and had a number of those "crazy" labs (and a cat or two) we would always tie the tree to the woodwork to avoid the kind of crash you two experienced! Ornaments and tinsel adorned the tether so it would look as festive as the tree.... Merry Christmas to you all and best wishes for your niece's recovery.

  12. It was good to read that your niece is home again, making a full recovery I hope. Four dogs were a handful by the sound of it. Glad you weren’t hurt when the tree fell on you both. I wish you great luck for that buck in the time remaining in the season.

  13. I’m sorry to hear about your niece. I hope she recovers soon and is back home. Maybe your freezer will runith over soon after all. What a crazy mess with the tree!
I know what you mean about life going on for most while others go through silent struggles. Seems we’re all there now and then. I hope your year ends on a high note with venison a plenty. Can you use your tag for a doe so it doesn’t go wasted?

  15. Life is full of the unexpected, the impossible to understand, and it makes us both believers and unbelievers at the same time. We wish the very best for your niece and her family, including you and Barb as you all navigate these trying times. I truly understand what you mean about feeling guilty because you continue to live life when lives around you are so different, instantly changed, unreal in many ways. It is however one of the ugly realities.

As to the deer hunting, I’m beginning to wonder if you are worried you can’t make the shot. If maybe you are just enjoying watching nature and finding excuses. Lol. Just saying…..

I would have thought the idea of tying the Christmas tree up would have already occurred to you but ….i would have been mistaken, wouldn’t I? Sometimes I wonder….. lol.

    Merry Christmas friends.

  16. Your post pretty much sums up our year. One foot in front of the other then, BOOM!, life interrupts with emergencies and unexpected plot twists.

We truly hope things settle down for you (and us!) enough to enjoy the holiday season.

All the best from sunny and very dry Florida.

  17. I´m so sorry to hear about your niece- hopefully she makes a full recovery. My step MIL passed away this week. She was quite old and in poor health so it wasn´t a complete surprise but it still was a surprise. She wasn´t in hospice care or anything. My husband and I weren´t close to her (she married my husband´s dad later in life) but we feel terrible for my FIL and know this event will change our interactions with him (we will likely see him a lot more to keep him company). My goodness about the tree- that would have scared the daylights out of me and I would have been a crying mess at seeing the loss of ornaments and knowing how much clean up was in store! Did you take pics of the mess? Speaking of pics, the snow pictures are beautiful. The one with the pinecone could be in a magazine or on a print to be displayed.
