Barb and I have been coming up here for ….. like forever (well actually 8 years) and each time we stay 4-5 weeks and each time I eagerly await the announcement of who will be the winner of the Employee of the Month award. Even though it is not the end of the month yet, we are leaving in a couple days and since I am basically their only employee, I think I have a good shot!
Up at sunrise, getting to bed well after sunset, I gave it my
all over the past 5 weeks. Hauling grain, carting and harrowing for hours on
end. Working in and cleaning dusty grain bins I am sure the coveted award is
mine. I will be the envy of everyone in the county!

Then suddenly, one day I have some competition when Barb
tells Chris “I could harrow if you want me to”. Next thing I know Barb and
Chris are off in the 440 quadtrac and she is learning to harrow. But I am not
worried, I have hundreds of hours on her and surely she will take down a fence
trying to maneuver the 70’ harrow through the field. Or if I am really lucky
maybe she even hit a tree and knock a tire off! (I heard someone did that a few
years ago).

So after a quick lesson on how to use the guidance and controls, she is out on her own harrowing a couple of hundred acre field. At 60 acres/hour it should take her a good 5-6 hours to get it done. Imagine our surprise when she is back in 2 hours. When asked what went wrong she simply replies “Nothing, I got some done, I will go back later and do some more”.
She explains that she is more of a casual farmer get a little done now, a little done later…. Chris laughs and says “Casual and Farmer, two words I have never used in the same sentence." I stand back and snicker, the employee of the month award is officially a lock!
I continue to do my thing working each day at whatever they need. But it was not all work this week as Bob, DeAnne, Barb and I got out on a little adventure. We went ATV'ing at Kimball Bottoms OHV area just south of Bismarck. Bob had just bought a brand new Polaris Ranger 1000 the week before and wanted to do a little trail riding.
Their old Ranger 500 fit right in the back of our pickup and we trailered the 1000 an hour south to the OHV area. We had a great day whipping through the trails, switching drivers and passengers throughout the day.
The trails are right along the Missouri River, a mix of woods and sandy beaches with 25 miles of trails weaving through 400 acres. It was relatively quiet on this Friday but as we were preparing to leave in the afternoon the weekenders started showing up as you can camp for free as well.

That's funny stuff right there. I can see why Barb got the award. She is a quick learner, willing to take on new tasks and most importantly, she can delegate a peeon to finish the work she started and still take credit for it. I am surprised she is not the CEO of GM or something. Besides, Barb's pie is infamous.
ReplyDeleteI guess that would make me a slow learning peon?
DeleteBarb knows that you don't get ahead by starting at the bottom. The way to the top is to start there or in this case trough their Stomachs.
ReplyDeleteBe Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
Silly me thinking hard work and dedication would get me there!
DeleteSo at least you got your tires back. Too bad you had to work your fingers to the bone to get them. I guess that makes you emancipated and emaciated all in one fell swoop.
ReplyDeleteSo very true, good thing you know the difference between the two!
DeleteBummerJim...I was rooting for you. At least you have a year to learn how to out bake Barb. π
ReplyDeleteSafe travels!
Yeah, I highly doubt that is going to happen!
DeleteWay to go Barb, that is some mighty fine looking baking. :)
ReplyDeleteI have an idea! You and Barb should have a bake-off with Ray and I as the judges!
DeleteAwesome baking Barb! Outsmarted again Jim! Sorry, not sorry π. Better luck next year. Better but something and freeze it for next year!
ReplyDeletein all reality, it does not take that much to outsmart me!
DeleteI'm pretty sure pie is considered life's great equalizer. "You're an astronaut? Whatever. I've got pie." See? It's just the way it is. The moral of the story is: You need to learn to bake. :)
ReplyDeleteAs good as Barb bakes I am fine just fading into the background and enjoy the benefits.
