Our journey home from Oregon went just as we wanted it. Uneventful. Driving the new truck made time go faster as we learned the ins and outs of our new ride. At lot has changed since our last new truck in 2013, our first surprise was "Lane Assist" which helps you stay in your lane as you are watching herds of antelope or looking in the field to see a lone coyote crossing the prairie. Barb is used to the sound of rumble strips and has actually given up saying anything as I ride the shoulder gawking at something or another. But this lane assist actually steers your truck for you back to where you should be. Really a weird feeling as you feel a counter force on your steering wheel.
What we were really curious about was what kind of fuel economy we were going to get. Well, I don't know if "economy" is the right word so we will go with "mileage". We know this is going to change over time, but our mileage varied from 9.5mpg to 12.0mpg depending on our terrain and how you measured it. Keep in mind we were pulling a trailer so that will definitely impact it. The first fill I measured it we had a head wind and were in some mountainous terrain. The MPG on display said we got 10.1mpg but our actual was only 9.5mpg so the display is not quite accurate. I reset the display and measured it again. This time we got an actual of 12.2 while the display read 12.0. Closer but still not accurate. Since we have been back and without the trailer it looks like we are getting anywhere from 15-17mpg. About the same as our old truck. Diesel prices along the way were anywhere from $4.09 - $4.35/gallon. A far cry from the $2.70/gallon at this time last year resulting in us paying $350 more in fuel on this one trip than we would have last year. I do not even want to think how much more we will be paying this summer!
Pulling into our driveway after 3 days of driving we felt a sense of nirvana flow throughout our bodies. It was so good to be home! It's that time of year that Mother Nature seems very, very confused as this week we saw temperatures as high as 62 and as low as the teens. Both the deer and turkeys were happy to have us home! These two pictures were taken a day apart....
But upon closer inspection we were able to decipher what exactly happened. This picture tells the rest of the story....
Our plan was to take a few days off and relax after hitting it so hard at Forrest's but we were right at it again the next day when Kevin came over and we went to work on the dog wash. He had already been over two days while we were gone so he had a good start on it but was waiting until we were home until he finished the last few rows as Barb used Cheryl's diamond wheel to cut a few dog paws into some tiles.
Which can "spit" at the camper the most, Pepsi or Coke???? lol
ReplyDeleteGood question! Based on the fact that the coke can lid was over by the camper and the pepsi can lid was just split, I am going to go with coke!
DeleteA few years ago we rented a car and weren’t told anything about the lane assist and anti collision braking features…thought something was wrong with the car at first…LOL! Not looking forward to our fuel bill as we head north. That’s a pretty fancy washing station for Dakota and Zoe…looks great! Glad you made it back safely and are enjoying your new wheels.
ReplyDeleteI remember you talking about that! It sure catches you off-guard if you are not expecting it. Ours has that same collision control, I was playing with it a little on the way home. Quite interesting!
DeleteIt appears to me that Zoey has learned that behavior from maybe watching you. But I am no dog whisperer. I did watch the whole video without shooting myself. Your truck sounds fancy. That's how they get you. They give you a false sense of security and then BAM!!!!!! Your flying through the windshield. I will never have a self driving or self parking vehicle. I want to remain in control.
ReplyDeleteWho are you kidding? You have not been in control since the day you put a ring on Lisa's finger!
DeleteLoved the video...she's such a cutie. I will have to send you one of Sadie when she's talking to us. LOL. They are such manipulators!
ReplyDeleteIt is quite entertaining to see them moan, groan and whine getting more and more frustrated when they do not get their way.
DeleteOh I know that puppy sound SO well!! 'Cept here it quickly turns into a BARK!!! Love the doggy wash, though I bet they really aren't looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Barb!! At least Jim gave you the perfect one for breakfast!!
As to the truck, I rode in one that did the braking for you. I panicked every time, thinking we were going to hit the vehicle ahead of us. I think I'll just stick with my old 2005 that you actually have to drive. Good mileage though ... I get 15 when not pulling.
Although all those fancy gadgets are fun, sometimes I wish they would go back to the basics. The more gadgets there are, the more there is to go wrong.
DeleteHappy Birthday Barb!! Breakfast sounds delicious and lovingly made. would love mohave seen Kevin's celebration dance, especially with the princess crown on LOL. What a difference between the two days! Love the doggie shower with the little paws!
ReplyDeleteOh, Kevin does have some "special" dance moves. Maybe I will try to capture it next time we go bowling.
DeleteWow what a sticky mess you will have to clean for the exploded pop cans. Zoey is so funny whining for Barb. Doesn't take long for them to figure it out how to motivate their hoomans. lol
ReplyDeleteWhat in the world motivates them to even start whining like that? Then when they learn they get their way, they do it even more!
DeleteWhat a neat dog bath! Good that you made it home without issues and enjoyed your new ride. You think Zoey is a bit spoiled? She sounded so funny but cute all the same. Just melts your heart :-)
ReplyDeleteShe is more than a little spoiled but I am sure it will get better over time.....right?
DeleteLove the addition of the paw prints in the pet shower. So cute! That video of Zoey is beyond funny. You had both of us laughing too hard. I guess someone is quite spoiled!
ReplyDeleteShe actually isn't that spoiled but she does get in these moods where she wants all the attention!
DeleteSo, with regard to the lane assist, let's say you see something up the road ahead of you (for example, a tire tread lying in the middle of your lane) and you want to go onto the shoulder in order to go around it, how long does the car fight you before it accepts that you're doing it intentionally? Or does it just keep fighting you? It definitely sounds helpful otherwise, I would just want to be able to override it when necessary.
ReplyDeleteYou feel a slight nudge to the left or right but if you hold it steady it stops trying. Very easy to override.
DeleteZoey is just too funny!! I like the lane assist idea, then I can quit bugging Dale when he's gawking or changing his music station, LOL, I'll let our next truck nag him so I don't have to.
ReplyDeleteThey put those rumble strips there for a reason, it would be a shame not to use them!
DeleteGlad you got home safe & sound. Love the dog bath. I had to laugh at Zoey expressing her wants. Just tonight one of the girls rang the bell to go outside but she was just telling us to hurry up with their dinner.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny! Sounds like they are little manipulators too. We talked about teaching Zoey to ring a bell to go outside but it sounds like another way for her to use us!
DeleteI just love the doggie wash! Cute video! I don't care what Dino says.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone really care what Dino says?
DeleteThat lane assist got us in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteIt was such a weird sensation at first but now we find that we kind of like it!
