To Go or Not to Go?

Just when you thought things were getting better. You were glad to have 2021 behind you and get back to "normal". Almost everything is or will be open, mask mandates are all but gone and you are ready to hit the road and start exploring again!

Then this happens.....

I read a blog from a fellow RV'er this week that reported diesel over $7.00/gallon in California. We have several RV friends who are changing or totally canceling their summer travel based on fuel prices.

I have my own opinions on whether this was avoidable or not and we are more than willing to pay for the most recent increase to help out the citizens of Ukraine, but this post is not about why. It is about how it is going to impact us RV'ers as we plan our summer travels.

Personally, we have an 8,500-mile route planned over the next 6 months throughout the U.S. and Canada. At an average of 10mpg that would be 850 gallons. Last year that would have cost us about $2,300 at $2.70/gallon. This year, with prices in the $4.50-???? range we are anticipating spending $4,000-$5,000 just in fuel. Is it worth it?  And that is just fuel, everything is going up. Think about how much more truckers and farmers fuel expense, our $5,000 is a drop in the bucket compared to them. Fertilizer is at an all-time high, cooking oil for restaurants is at an all-time high, lots of things are at an all-time high. Farmers like Farmer Bob use upwards 350 tons of urea in the spring. Last year it was somewhere around $335/ton, this year it is about $865/ton. That is an additional expense of over $150,000 on that one item! These and other cost increases are why we are seeing groceries going up as well, as it costs more to produce and transport items to our local grocery stores. I cannot think of one thing that has gone down this year. Oh wait, the balance of our savings, that has gone down this year.... So, a lot of people need to ask themselves; Do we need to change our plans and just lay low this summer? The sad but true reality of life at the moment. So we are in deep contemplation on what is the right thing to do this summer.

But enough depressing talk, we have managed to make our own fun in our own little slice of heaven. For me personally my outlet this week was hunting. Did you know that the average mountain lion eats 1 deer a week? Did you know there are 600+ mountain lions in the Black Hills at any given time? Did you know a female mountain lion's litters are from 1-6 cubs? That is over 31,000 deer, elk, mountain goats or big horn sheep killed by mountain lions each year. So, the state has asked hunters to help maintain a healthy population here in the hills so they do not start preying on arthritic ridden hikers  whose wives makes them go on death marches where they eventually lag behind and become easy prey for even the slowest lion. And who am I to refuse such an ask? Afterall, I could be saving a friends life!

It is not as easy as driving around, seeing one and shooting it. In fact, in all my years of hunting, hiking and other outdoor activities, I have yet to even glimpse one. Some states allow hunters to use dogs, South Dakota does not. The best method here is to wait until it snows and drive around until you cut a fresh track. Which is exactly what Kevin and I did earlier this week.

We put on hundreds of miles on back roads and forest service roads, it is so peaceful driving through the forest being the first one on these roads since the last snowfall. We saw elk tracks, deer tracks, coyotes tracks and even mouse tracks.

Deer and mouse tracks

After several hours of searching, we finally cut a track and we were on the hunt!
Cat track!
Kevin jumped out and started following the track while I drove several miles ahead and climbed to the highest peak in the area in the hopes of seeing the elusive beast.
View from the top

I did not see a mountain lion, but I did see some pretty country. That in itself made it all worthwhile. Kevin on the other hand, followed the track for several miles. Up, down and all around. He never spotted the cat but it did lead him to an elk kill that it had been feeding on. Kevin sat a couple hundred yards away, hoping that he would return but he did not.  We are expecting more fresh snow later this week so the hunt will go on....

So, what was Barb doing while Kevin and I were out trying to save the local deer population? She was working on another project of course. She worked on grouting the dog wash:
She also worked on her bench and cubby area putting restored fence boards on the back and shelving for her baskets. Of course, she already does not like the bench and is going to redo it.
For my part, I set my project up on our granite work bench and started on the remaining four dresser drawers by ironing on the veneer edging to hide the rough edge of the birch plywood. I also drilled in the pocket screw holes. Now, I just need to construct them and fit them in the drawer slides!

We did manage to get over to Dan and Bonnie's one day to help them with their project. Their house is getting there. They still have floors, cabinets and trim to get in. Barb and Bonnie spent the day staining and varnishing trim, Dan was busy sanding, while Kevin installed window jams. I installed a toilet and plumbing for a vanity. I got a couple of before pictures of my work but totally spaced out the after pictures but they now have an operational toilet and vanity!
The days are getting longer and spring then summer are just around the corner, so we have a decision to make; To Go or Not to Go? As of right now, the answer is a definite YES! The extra expense is definitely worth it, we may have to cut back in other areas like ... maybe I cannot buy Barb that new elk rifle that she so desperately wanted, or maybe I will have to buy generic beer for my friend Dino when he comes out for his next death march! I don't know, but we will figure it out one way or another!

  1. I hope the answer remains a "definite YES!" I think back to March of 2020 of the things I put off "until the pandemic is over." Who would have ever dreamed we would be waiting for two years?? Two years later, and my fitness level has me reduced to arthritic mountain lion bait!

Who knows what next summer will bring. At the rate we are going, it could just as easily be worse as better. As the poem goes, "gather ye rosebuds while ye may!"

    1. We could not agree more. Unless things get really crazy we are going! Funny, that you should comment, Barb has been pouring over your Maritimes posts this week and getting lots of great information!

    2. That is one place that tugs at my heartstrings like no other. I keep hoping I will get the chance to go back there one day. But regardless, near or far, I look forward to following vicariously!

  2. Go...we leave Yuma heading east all the way to New Hampshire for our summer gig....and 2 Family weddings. Yes diesel will hurt but life is too short and we worked a long time to enjoy our retirement. Can't take the $$ with us to the next life we are gonna enjoy what time we have.

    1. Yuma to New Hampshire, that is a long drive! If all goes well, we will add NH to our "States Visited" sometime in July!

  3. Ahhhh I'm not for kitty hunting. I think we need to thin out the old folks who can't hike (or run) fast enough!!! Personally I think the oil companies are price gouging just because they can. We have all the oil we need to keep prices down ... just USE it!! Anyhoo ... the good thing is everyone who bought a camper last year will now sell it because they can't afford to travel. That means there will be fewer on the road and in the places you want to stay. I say GO!!!

    1. We have a few virtual friends who I figured would not be fans of cat hunting and that's okay. How boring would the world be if we all thought and acted alike? I have read several articles where newbie RV'ers are getting frustrated and selling their rigs and that was before the cost of fuel went up. A lot of people bought huge rigs expecting this nirvana experience only to find their rigs would not fit into a lot of campgrounds and when they did, noisy and rude neighbors ruined their experience. Nirvana is out there but you have to work at it and a lot of people don't have the patience for that.

  4. You sure delve into some hard hitting topics. Are you sure you haven't worked for Paul Harvey? Arthritic Hikers are people too. You better not skimp on the beer. That's the only reason (well one of the only reasons) we visit. So that I can get some middle or top shelf beer. Without that, I might as well go visit someone like .....Harry. As for us, we are on the fence also. We may have to visit the BANK!

    1. Haven't you learned by now that once money goes into the bank it is no longer yours? It enters this matrix like world where it becomes a number on a piece of paper and must always remain constant or go up. Heaven forbid that you ever take money out and the number goes down!

You guys are loaded and can afford to go anywhere you want, you just might have to sell a gun or two.

    2. How dare you speak such nonsense! Sell a gun?!?! I don't have any to spare. Make sure Lisa knows that.

    3. What was I thinking? Those a valuable investments!

  5. In all my years of hunting I spotted a pair of cougars once but I’m sure I have been spotted by them many times. Vancouver Island has the highest concentration of cougars in the world and are often found roaming the streets around Victoria because that’s where all the deer seem to be these days. We too are contemplating our summer travel plans. Just getting back to BC from Quartzsite is going to be costly.
    Cheers!

    1. I often wonder, as I am walking through the woods, how many lions, wolves, bears and other creatures I have passed without ever knowing it. For the most part they leave us humans alone but when they get overpopulated and start crowding into suburban areas, they start to look for easy meals like Fluffy and Fido. There are some pretty cool videos on YouTube where cougars and pets are staring at each other through patio windows.

  6. "I cannot think of one thing that has gone down this year." Well, one politician's approval rating has certainly gone down....and will continue to go down.

We have a nearly 6,000 mile trip starting next month. It will be a no thrills, go out to California and come back with just a few stops on the way to visit friends who lost their spouses within the 45 days...and 'perhaps' a side trip up to the southwest Oregon coast which we have missed these past two years. Of course, seeing mom and celebrating her 92nd birthday is the main motive of doing the trip, so it will be well worth the price.

    1. The Southwest coast of Oregon is definitely worth an extra mile or two! We have been looking forward to this Maritimes trip for a long time and have put it off more than once. Hopefully 2022 is the year we make it happen!

  7. How fun planning your trip to the Maritimes. Ray and I have that on our bucket list too, but will not drive across Canada but will fly and rent a car when the time comes. With having a lake house I just cannot bear not being on our lake for the summer. :) I have next year's trip to the USA all planned out though starting September 20th, 2022

    1. We were planning our route to stay in the U.S. as long as possible and keep our fuel cost a little lower. Now I see that some provinces may be eliminating their fuel tax so it will probably be cheaper up there! Do any of your travel plans bring you into South Dakota?

    2. Not this year. :( We are planning to go Idaho Falls and then start making our way southeast to Colorado Springs stopping to see Flaming Gorge, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Dinosaur National Monument, etc. Lots of photography possibilities for Ray. :)

  8. I'm glad you are continuing with your plans, I'll be making notes of "must see" places for a future trip!!
We were just talking last night that we're thankful this year that we decided on a shorter travel route this summer, AZ to NM to CO to UT and back to AZ for the winter. So no California or Pacific NW which will save us a bunch on fuel and give us some new areas to explore.
We're feeling the pain of all expenses going up, what a time to buy and furnish a house, savings account is definitely lower than it was in January.

    1. You live in the perfect area to do just that. We would love to spend more time in all of those states as well. Next time we have a summer to play. we would love to explore Colorado, Wyoming and Montana more. They are just a couple hours away yet we hardly spend any time there!

    2. May have to do some planning for 2023 and see where we can overlap as we're planning SD, ND and Montana for 2023!!

    3. We may have Alaska plans but hopefully it will work out!

  9. If we all just knew what the future brings. So with the high gas prices, to go or not to go, its only money, right. ;-)

    1. When we hit the road in the spring of '14 fuel prices were at an all-time high. That did not stop us, so why should we let this all-time high stop us!?!

  10. There's never a perfect time for anything and you can waste your whole life waiting around worrying about things you have no control over. Just go. Things have a way of working themselves out.

  11. We know a wildlife biologist here in Edmonton that has been studying the Alberta cougar population and the area where we had our RV lot was one of the highest concentrations of big cats. Never saw one in 3 years.
Fuel costs are much higher everywhere but just think as soon as you cross the border you get minimum 25% discount on the posted price!!! American green power lol. Work that new Ram.

    2. On second thought...I just read a blog that said Diesel was $2.239/liter, $8.76/gallon CA, $6.61/gallon U.S.... Yikes!

    3. Either coast is higher priced sadly. Hopefully things come down a little before you travel. We also want to see our east coast someday, Newfoundland is a must someday!
Actually the biologist is a woman so yes they saw her for sure. Pics on her FB page tagging cats and blood testing kittens are amazing. She pulled kittens out of the dens with a team watching her back. Very cool.

    4. Wow, what a cool job! We should be in Newfoundland in June, if you know any sights over that way that are a "must see" let us know.
