Living East Coast Style!

What is living East Coast Style you ask? Some might think it is talking with a New York or Boston or Philly accent while ordering a cheese steak, clam chowder or perhaps a lobster roll. Others might think it is walking the beaches and boardwalk in Jersey or OBX. (For those of you non-east coasters, OBX is the Outer Banks). Well, it is none of those, living east coast in our house means waking up at 4am and going to bed at 8pm. Apparently, our bodies are on east coast time, at least if we lived there, we would be waking up at 6 and going to bed at 10! But no, for the past week or more, here we are stuck in the 4am, 8pm cycle.

But one nice thing about getting up early is that I can have breakfast before I go out deer hunting! The word for the week when it came to deer hunting was frigid! With highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits, it was frigid out there in the stand. Although I did not shoot anything with my bow, I did manage to get some great shots with my camera!

While at first glance this guy looks like an awesome buck, another angle shows you how aggressive he is with several broken times on his rack.

Then there was this guy who is an amazing buck but is not destined for the freezer, well at least not our freezer.
As you can see from the frost and snow on the deer and the surrounding trees it was a bit chilly out there. The fog and frost made for another really cool windmill picture!
Both Barb and I learned a valuable lesson this week about using a hot tub in cold weather. Each, at separate times, we got out of the hot tub went to the sliding door and grabbed the handle with wet hands. Our hands instantly froze to the door handle ala The Christmas Story. Luckily, we did not have to call the fire department to have our hands removed from the handle, but it was a lesson we will....well, we will probably actually forget it and freeze our hands to the handle again soon!

But none of that is the reason any of you tuned in this week. I, like you, have been anxiously awaiting the unveiling of the headboard Barb made for our bedroom. So, without further ado.... drum roll........

Pretty amazing right?!?!? For perspective, these boards started out as this....
So, you can see why these boards required cutting new edges, sanding, planing, and varnishing before they became the finished product.

That's really it for this week. I have been working on the workshop and loft but nothing picture worthy.

I think I have found a fix for email notifications for the blog. So, if you want to receive an email when we post a blog, please send me your email address as a comment. I will not publish your email address, but I can add it to the email list!

And no blog is complete without a picture of Ms. Zoey, who has taken to sitting on top of the couch to watch whatever Barb is doing on the kitchen island.

Have a great week!

  1. If you are passing up on those deer, I wonder what "Buckzilla" looks like. I dare you to tea bag the door handle. You still owe me a case of beer plus 8 singles now. Inflation. The headboard looks great Barb. I am glad you can finish projects while Jim "hunts".

    1. I wonder the same thing but will know when I see him! I better hurry up and pay my debt before it becomes an entire truckload of beer!

  2. I triple deer dare you to lick that handle! Barb is an awesome woodworker! When I was the plant manager of our furniture company, I would take the newbies up to workers like her and say “watch and learn, Jim”.

    1. Oh no, not the Triple Deer Dare! "And with that, Jim Belisle created a slight breach of etiquette skipping the triple dog dare and going for the triple deer dare!"

    1. As you know, it is as much about being out there and enjoying nature than it is about harvesting a deer. Just love those cool, crisp mornings!

  4. Beautiful bed construction! Our son made a similar one (with nightstands incorporated) with barn wood from our 200 year old barn back in New York State before we moved. Great recycling!

    1. It is the one you sent that is working. It just took me a week or so to make sure it was working for the test person I had tried it with. Thanks for the info!

  6. Love the headboard, Zoey is looking great (as is Dakota), and it seems that the trigger finger is going to have to 'pull the trigger' real soon.

    1. I find that Barb does her best work while I am out of the house hunting or fishing and who am I to get in the way of her ingenuity at work!

  9. Ugh! If I have to get up at 4am I'm back in bed again by 6am!! But I understand where you are coming from, and good to see you are managing to make the most of it with going out hunting. And please don't lick that door handle :)

  11. The bed looks great! Barb did a fantastic job with it! Wow with all the deer you saw! I remember our first year in Montana and seeing a dead deer in the back of someone's truck. Took me a while to get used to seeing that :) I do get up at 4:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and by 8:30 p.m. I'm ready to call it a night :)

    1. When we lived in Wisconsin, we used to see a lot of deer in the back of trucks. Around here it is elk, we do not see nearly as many deer. We do enjoy our peaceful mornings so it is not too bad but 5, or even 6:00 would be better.

    1. We wish it was 5:00 or even 6:00! Although with deer hunting, I need to get out there around 6:00 anyway. It would be simply amazing to sleep even later than that!

  14. Wow! Amazing and beautiful job, Barb, with the headboard!! And Jim you chose the perfect photo to show us the original fence. Dakota is so adorable. Now that is the way you "shoot" those beautiful deer...haha! Hope your internal clock changes time soon!

    2. Haha! No! For some reason I've had trouble with the time change this time. I've never had any trouble. Your wake up times sound like mine lately.

  15. The cold comes through the deer photos, Jim. It must have been bone chilling.

Beautiful job on the headboard, Barb. Recycling at its best. Love it.

Stay warm out there, Jim and good luck with the hunting!

  16. Darn, I missed this post. Nice racks there, but I'm too fond of looking at them to shoot them. NICE headboard too! It looks quite like mine, only ten times better. Fabulous job Barb!! Funny how our pups like to be up high on the couch! I think I'd have the hot tub INSIDE, or at least a pot of boiling water set by the door. BRRRRR

    1. So far we've only had the frozen hand to door phenomenon when it's in the single digits. Let's hope we don't have many more or those!

  17. As everyone says, the headboard is a wonderful upcycle example - good job Barb. Between the crisp morning air and the serene quiet, it's easy to understand the lure of early morning hunting. I would be grateful for a chance at breakfast first though.

    1. These mornings are so quiet that the deer hear you when you take a deep breath. It is just fun to sit and watch them doing their thing out in the wild.

  18. i am a little confused about the east coast part of your story...it does not take much to confuse me. are you on the east coast, visiting? hunting?

my husband said you are an "overachiever"...he is not!! hehehe

the headboard is GORGEOUS!!! barb did an awesome job, putting me to shame a little. i can't wait to get this damn cast off, it is really messing with my mojo!! be sure and tell barn how much i love it. so cool that it was made with items that were recycled!!

    1. No, what I was trying to say is that our bodies are on east coast time with us getting up so early here. I bet that cast is really cramping your style, I have never had a cast but I am sure it would drive me crazy!

    2. cast's off!!! typing with 2 hands now and lovin' it!! next, knitting, fingers crossed that works out!!

  19. This summer daylight saving time jumping back and forth my system gets all screwed up so we are just adjusting slightly every day until we are comfortable with the eating and getting up or staying late thing. Barb sure is talented. My hat's off to her for this great job of making the headboard. She could go into business with it!

    1. Agreed, although I think she could go into business, I think it might take the fun out of it so she will probably just stick with our own stuff!

  20. 4:00 a.m.? Kevin often doesn't go to bed until 4:00 a.m. LOL. Y'all are crazy!

The headboard looks awesome, even more so knowing how much work went into making it happen. So impressive!

And email notifications? Yes! Sign me up (so I don't keep showing up here days late).
