Now that I have left my quinquagenarian and entered my Sexagenarian decade I think it might be time to act my age instead of my I.Q. No more late nights for me, my new bedtime time is 8pm, meaning I will be up at 4am. Time for me to get an EZ lift chair where I will sit all day watch TV and blog about all my ailments. Oh wait, apparently you do not need to hit 60 to do that. I just happen to know someone who has been doing that for years and he is still a quinquagenarian!
Screw it, I am going to act my I.Q., it is much more funner, yeah, funner is a word. For example, when used in a sentence it looks like this. "Lisa is a lot more funner than Dino cuz all he does is sit in his EZ chair all day and watch daytime soap operas". Stick with me, you will learn a lot of things.
I had a great birthday though. Barb made me strawberry crepes, delicious! Then I went over to Kevin's to help him set some floor trusses for one of his neighbors that is starting to build a house.
After that it was back home where Barb broke out the pasta attachment she got for Christmas. She had never made homemade pasta before, so it was quite the interesting process. The end result was the best pasta we have ever had. It may have been a first, but it certainly will not be the last!
This was followed up with a delicious supper of crab legs and steak. Umm, this turning 60 thing is not so bad after all!
For several months now Dan, Bonnie, Kevin, Cheryl, Barb and I have been planning a get together for New Year's Eve. We were each to bring 3 jars of Ole Smokey Moonshine for a taste testing. We added a few jars and bottles of stuff we had already as well.
Oh, what a night it was! We each had a scorecard divided into two categories. Straight alcohol and creams. We had some pretty tasty moonshine and some pretty nasty stuff. The nastiest of all was the Ole Smokey Apple Pie. It was so strong and so sour that it let this expression on Kevin's face.
The winner for the night was not an Ole Smokey product at all, it was our very own Apple Pie Moonshine from the J-B Distilling Co!
The moods got goofier throughout the evening, culminating
with Barb laughing uncontrollably and arm-wrestling
Kevin. She put up a good left-handed
battle but did not win. The party ended abruptly when Barb said she was not feeling well and went to the bathroom for an important meeting. When the meeting was over, she quietly slipped into the bedroom. We cleaned up, hung out for a bit and everyone quietly slipped out of the house. The next day was very quiet, we were supposed to have a few people over for the Vikings/Packers game but when Barb had not emerged from the bedroom by noon, I canceled the festivities. Just as well, the Vikings did not show up to play. We spent a quiet day on the couch watching football and a few movies.
Kevin and I did get out mountain lion hunting one morning after a fresh snowfall. It was a beautiful morning; we drove a lot of miles in some remote country but never cut a track.
The next day we had a surprise visit from Farmer Bob and DeAnne! Well, Barb knew they were coming but I did not. They spent 3 days, 4 nights with us. Bob told me to do whatever I was going to do this week, so I did and put him to work!
We burned brush piles, we cut and split firewood
We worked on putting some boards up on the outside of the workshop....
And then he....
Each day we did pretty much the same thing; burn brush piles, split wood, stack wood and nap. I did get out on a couple of adventures. Barb and DeAnne stayed inside and played accordions. DeAnne also worked on a couple of quilt tops. She brought her sewing machine and everything she needed to make the tops.
Bob and I drove through Wind Cave NP and Custer SP one morning and saw some of the park creatures. We saw elk, bison, antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, I think that was it. Oh, and a bunny!
The four of us went for a jeep ride on some forest service roads through some remote country. I think Bob and DeAnne were questioning the wisdom of our decision as we cut fresh tracks through the forest. We also stopped by the
Mammoth Site in Hot Springs. We have lived here for 5 years and had yet to stop by this popular tourist attraction. We pass it almost every week and it is always crowded during the tourist season but on this day, we were the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th visitors for the day and had the place to ourselves! Barb and I always wanted to stop but it was not very high on our list and we had low expectations. It far, far, exceeded our expectations.

The story of how this site was found and how the mammoths' met their demise is tragic. It also makes you realize how short a lifetime is in the scheme of things and leaves you wonder how many other similar discoveries are buried just below the surface waiting to be found. Well worth the $12 entry fee (Senior, the first time I claimed to be over 60!).

Overall, we had a great 3 days. Thanks, guys, for coming down and surprising me. Thank you also for the mugs and the vintage ammo boxes. They are a great addition to my collection!
If all goes as planned, we will be spending the week packing the camper and getting ready for our next great adventure. The plan is to be on the road a week from today!
Happy birthday! Adventures and rest...sounds good. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you Rita! We are both looking forward to a little more rest once we hit the road. That way we will not guilt ourselves into working on something and not relaxing.
DeleteYou're so kind that you didn't even mention that the board I was cutting in the picture ended up an inch too short. Oops! We had a great time and thanks again.
ReplyDeleteYour secret was safe with me but now that you mention it... I think you are the first person to ever "inch" a board. As luck would have it, it was an inch short instead of an inch long. Seems to always work out that way!
DeleteLOL at 6 AM being "sleeping in"! We surface about 9 AM around here :-) Fun new years pics. The mammoth dig in Waco is similar, love seeing the bones in situ like that. Looking forward to seeing where your adventure takes you!
ReplyDeleteOur usual wake up time is between 5-5:30. On a rare occasion it might be 7:00!
DeleteIt’s Gay…happy birthday Jim. I think my 60s were my most favorite years…hope yours are too! It must be nice to have surprise company and put them to work…good friends are like that!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's weird, I never considered my 60's but I too hope they are some of my favorite years!
DeleteIt looks like a good time was had for the entire duration of your post, from the moonshine fun to your visitors. You sound excited to use your senior discount. Packing is tough work, we tend to take a week or ten days to sort and pack/unpack from the Igloo/storage twice a year and we aren’t even your age! I wonder if Barb does most of it and that’s why it only takes a week or less? Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteDeb
My job is to pack all the outdoor gear, grill, chairs and stuff like that. Barb takes care of all the food, clothing, pretty much anything that goes 'in' the camper. So, you are basically right. I am not allowed to pack anything inside the camper.
DeleteA belated Happy Birthday, great pics & fun memories & activities with special friends- sorry Barb ended being unwell .Looking forward to your upcoming adventure(s),lol.
ReplyDeleteAll the best.
It took Barb about 4 days, but she is back to her normal self again. I think it will be a while before she indulges like that again!
DeleteYour birthday sounds perfect! Glad you enjoyed it so much!
ReplyDeleteThe animals you mentioned in this post are only a dream for someone from the east coast. Wow!
I look forward to your adventures!
That is one thing that I found interesting about your island. I kept searching high and low of deer on PEI only to find out that I could look for years and never find one!
DeleteWell happy Six Oh!!! You're just a young-un! Yeah, you gotta watch out for that shine ... it can be a bugger!! LOVE the critters ... the freezing snow, not so much, but it sure is pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteWe now have 12, 1/2 jars of shine sitting in our cupboard. I think it will be a while before we pull those out again!
DeleteWe loved the mammoth place. Do you know you can work there on a volunteer basis at times? So good to see Barb able to arm wrestle!
ReplyDeleteWe did see that they take volunteer excavators, that would be interesting, but we have way too much going on here to do something like that right now.
DeleteAs I sit here in my EZ lift chair wondering how to respond, I can't help but think of how easy it must be to attack a cripple. Don't worry about us surprising you with a visit. I know for a fact your house is not ADA compatible. I am glad that Barb is making some pasta. Growing up in an Italian family, my mother would also make pasta. For holidays we would make a noodle called the Cavadeal. It is made by hand and us kids were enlisted for hours making thousands of noodles. The way it was made we called chigging and we would chig until our fingers fell off. Good times. True story. Someday we will have to chig together.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, we are not ADA compliant. Getting you up the stairs might be a challenge but getting you down would not be a problem. Just a gentle nudge and you'd be back down in no time!
DeleteI looked up the word 'Chig'. There are two definitions. One describes be to a T and the other describes you. "Chig When in extended form, pertains to a selfless giving nature". The other one is actually an alien "The Chig race evolved on a world due to panspermia and find both oxygen and water extremely toxic to them. While water simply makes them bleed profusely and die in a seizure, contact with oxygenated atmospheres actually immediately disintegrates their bodies. Instead, Chig breathe a methane-rich atmosphere native to their homeworld."
Happy birthday, Jim! Sounds like you had a nice birthday. Love the parks in SD. I never get tired of driving through them. We've never been to Mammoth site in Hot Springs. Sounds very interesting. Our new years eve was quiet but had the kids and grandkids on new years day (23 of them). Had a great time. First time in 16 years we've been in MN for the holidays.
ReplyDelete23?!?! That is crazy. If we got together all of our kids and grandkids, we would have a grand total of 7 and that's including spouses!
DeleteFunner most certainly is a word!
ReplyDeleteJust think how less funner the world would be without such a word!
DeleteNew Years Eve has a familiar Ground Hogs Quartzsite-ish sound to it 🤫
ReplyDeleteWhat s great birthday with friends and fun outdoor adventures. Looking forward to hearing of your trip.
Doesn't it though? That was a fun night! Except again for Barb....
DeleteThank goodness it has been DECADES since I last has an appointment with the Porcelain God. Wise decision to have a "QUIET" day afterwards (hope my yelling QUIET did not disturb Barb...that moonshine can come back and attack you months later...good luck)
ReplyDeleteBarb says "Stop yelling at her!"
DeleteHappy belated birthday Jim and welcome to the 60’s! Looks like you guys have been having a blast after your chores. Poor Barb…a repeat of that memorable night in Q. 😉 We are so looking forward to seeing you guys in Feb!
ReplyDeleteThat night at Q will go down in infamy! I remember walking back to our rig in the dark and getting lost even though we were less than 100 yards away!
DeleteOh, I've been in that situation of over-indulgence. Not fun for days.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday. Enjoy your road trip. Be safe.
Thankfully, it has been many years for me now. No goodo at all!
DeleteWow, that shine looks powerful. I'd be dead if I tried taste test them all. Happy belated birthday and good that you now joined us adults. That Mammoth Site in Hot Springs looks like we would like to visit also, so thanks for posting the photos. Have a fantastic trip and looking forward to your postings from it.
ReplyDeleteThe mammoth site far exceeded my expectations, a must see for anyone in the area.
DeleteFunner should absolutely be a word. Saying more fun just sucks the fun out of fun.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
The world would definitely be a suckier place without fun words like that!
DeleteI can remember in my younger days waking up and staying in bed on New Years Day. Not anymore thank goodness LOL. Poor Barb! Your moonshine sounds yummy! Happy Birthday! You are still a youngun! We have not been to the Mammoth site either, another trip that way may be in order :)
ReplyDeleteI think Barb thought those days were behind her as well but apparently the Gods had another lesson for her.
Deletehappy birthday jim, i am just a little bit ahead of you and i have enjoyed my 60's so far. i think my 50's were my favorite. my health was better, no covid, no car accidents, yep, my 50's were better!!
ReplyDeletei don't make pasta because they sell it in the store...insert sarcastic face!!
too much moonshine for poor barb, she is a sport!! i'm not to fond of overnight guests, i try to keep them away. come...stay for the day...i will cook for you, entertain you a little, then it is time for you to go. if they don't get the hint by 9 pm, i stretch, yawn and announce that i am going to bed. that usually works!!
i use the word funner all the time, my computer does not underline it anymore, it got the message!!!
Since we had the covid during my later 50's, I guess those years were less funner than others so maybe my 60's will be awesome!
DeleteHappy belated birthday. I totally agree that funner is a word. I don't care if spell check agrees with me or not.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann! I generally follow the spelling and grammar that the computer suggests but sometimes you just have to go rogue!
DeleteOoof, I can feel that hangover from here. Any time you start getting sick WHILE drinking, you know the next day is gonna be rough. Sure sounds like it was a fun night...until it wasn't. LOL.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Happy Birthday!
She did have a rough couple of days after that but she is all better now. Hope all is well with you three over there in your new adventure!
DeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeleteWe once had a schnapps tasting volleyball game, if you made a mistake playing you were replaced and had to do a shot of one of the many different schnapps we had. Needless to say we were all feeling good by the time the game was over. Enjoy your 60's, we have.
ReplyDeleteNow, that sounds like fun!
