Have you dabbled in AI? Artificial Intelligence seems to be the buzz word of the year. The search engine on my phone has been taken over by AI, much to my chagrin. Why can't they leave things well enough alone? I just want text about what I am looking for not some minutes long voice description telling me everything I didn't want to know about a given subject. And half the time it does not hear you correctly and gives you a description of something totally different than what you wanted.
Then there are the pictures. Some of them are hilarious, others are so real that you cannot tell AI from real. You can put just about any picture in, make a request and it pops out a picture. Like this likeness of Zoey, Chloe and Jack.
Forrest put in a picture of Barb and a request of having her riding a French Bulldog and this is what it returned. At first glance
While the dog looks a lot like Zoey, the picture of Barb was super distorted putting 30 pounds on her and giving her buck teeth. Or maybe that is actually what he put in!
From what I am told, AI can actually write a blog for you by just putting in a few key words and pushing a button to have it generated. I have never tried that, that would just take the fun out of it for me. I do think I have one commenter that uses AI for her responses. Actually, many of you have the same commenter, if you read her comments, they include such detail on almost everything in the blog, it just does not sound natural and it always include a link. I might be wrong, but I do not think so.
All of this makes you wonder, what is real, what photo was actually taken? What essay was actually written? I, for one, have to get better at determining if something is generated with AI or is real. A friend recently sent me a picture of his living room asking me if I liked how he painted it. At first I focused on the whole picture noticing the newly painted walls. I did notice some other subtle differences but never guessed that it was an AI generated photo until he told me he hadn't actually painted his walls at all!
What have we been up to the last 10 days? Work continues on the garage. We got as much of the roof done as we can for right now, the full 36' of the garage area in fact. This allowed us to move the boat out of the house garage and put it in the new garage! One of the struggles of working on a steel roof in the summer is the heat. With temps in the 80's and 90's, you only have a few hours in the morning before the steel starts getting too hot to work on.
We are now getting ready to start phase II of this project which will be to add a 12' covered shed or lean to on the end. This will require us to drill some holes for posts, put beams across the 12' span, put more trusses up and cover it. This area will be for our covered trailer and protect it from the hail.
We ordered the siding which arrived on Friday, but the temps were in the 90's Friday, Saturday and Sunday so we opted for other tasks.
Like tackling the last that damn grout! I am sure you are as tired of reading about grouting the stone as I am writing about it. We did another bag yesterday completing about 20 more feet. One more session like this and we will be done!
But, it has not been all work, work, work, we had several fun days too! The first was when Forrest and I went to an archery shoot at Custer State Park. This was a free event put on by the park and what a blast! There were 60 life size 3D targets ranging from 15-100 yards throughout the course, and we bet $1 per target a potential $60 win if one of us were to win every target. The first target was at the check-in station. a 35-yard shot at an antelope with several observers and if you hit the bullseye, you won a prize. Both Forrest and I had been practicing a lot at home and either of us should be able to put it in or very close to the bullseye at that range.
I approached the station, lined up my shot and let the arrow loose only to watch it slam into the rocks under the target. What the ?!?! I heard Forrest (and someone else) laughing behind me. On top of the humiliation, that arrow broke so I was down the $15 cost of the arrow on top of the $1 loss to Forrest because he hit closer to the bullseye than me. In fact, he took the next 5 as well, so I was down $6 in the first 6 stations! It was then I realized that my sight was in the wrong position! I had moved it when I was back at home and not put it back in it's "home" position!!!!!
After that I started doing much better and over the next three hours, up and down the hills we shot the remaining of the 60 targets. I won some stations; he won some stations. We were hot, sweaty and thirsty. Neither of us had any idea of who won overall, but we decided that the loser buys Dairy Queen instead of paying the net of our $1/target. After tallying up the score (twice mind you) we were tied! How did we tie after 60 targets?!?! You know what that means right? Dad buys Dairy Queen of course.
The next "fun" event came when Barb and I loaded up the boat and camper and headed west into Wyoming. Destination Glendo Lake Reservoir! For you travelers out that, I am sure you have seen those check stations along the interstate with signs saying, "All watercraft must stop". The state of Wyoming requires that all watercraft be inspected prior to being launched into Wyoming waters. Why? They do not have invasive zebra mussels in that state yet and they are trying to avoid them. This is the first time we have had to stop at one of these stations and we had no idea what to expect. Pulling in, we were greeted by a 20 something kid with an iPad and he started asking questions. "Where was the boat in the water last?" "How long ago was that?". He then tells me that the lake the boat was last in was "on their list" and I needed to be decontaminated. Well, the boat, not actually me.
He filled the livewell with 130-degree water and let it sit. He then hooked up a hose to the motor and ran 130-degree water through the motor. The idea is that it is going to kill anything that should not be there. Once everything was "decontaminated" he put a metal seal on the winch of the boat and gave me a slip to give to the guy at the boat ramp.
2 hours later, we arrived at the Glendo Lake boat ramp, gave this inspection guy our paperwork, he inspects the seal, removes it and allows us to launch. They take their invasive species very serious in Wyoming!
What happened once we were on the water? Of course there is a competition on the water as well. They came in the form of first, most and biggest fish. This was our first fishing outing of the year so we had a lot riding on it for whoever wins gets bragging rights for the next few weeks!
First fish went to Barbie when she landed a nice 16" walleye. Into the livewell it went! Then I caught one, a 18"er that gave me the lead on the biggest fish! Fishing a new lake is tough. You do not know where the fish are, what they like or how to catch them. But we did okay. For the next two days we battled back and forth with the most and biggest fish, and wouldn't you know it when it was all said and done, we tied for the most fish!
That just leaves the biggest. Who do you think has bragging rights to begin the year? I am not going to say, but I will leave you with this picture.
But wait, is it real or is it AI? Only I know for now, I may reveal the real answer in our next post!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI have not used AI yet, not sure if I ever will. The AI image of Barb riding the dog is funny. Looks like you and Barb both caught some big fish, at least they look big to me. Poor Zoey, I do not think she like being left at home. Take care, have a great weekend.
Zoey had such a weird reaction when Barb came home. She approached her very cautiously and seemed a little scared.
DeleteI have been having the copilot icon following my cursor around in Excel. I have just looked up how to turn it off. Other than that, I don't seem to be too bothered by AI interfering with my personal computer use. I do worry about it though and wonder where we are headed. I am tending to think that if anyone uses it, it should be identified. I don't mean for removing a small object in photo editing, for example, but in creating things that aren't really there.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, there should be some identifier should someone create something soley with AI. It is now the main search engine on my phone, and I cannot figure out how to turn it off!
DeleteI haven't played around with AI, but I agree totally with you about the phone. It's ridiculous when I go to text and it changes the whole meaning of my message. Grrrr. And I know about these boat checks. We have them here in New Hampshire and I am actually one of the boat checkers, We're called Lake Hosts here. I keep my eye open for zebra mussels, invasive milfoil, and a few other things. Nice fish by the way. It's a beauty.
ReplyDeleteThis gentleman called himself an Aquatic Invasive Species Technician. I like "Lake Host" better!
DeleteI have to admit, Barb riding Chloe is a great picture, but I'm trying very hard not to get involved in that stuff. AI can take over your life and I sit enough as it is! Something about the fish looks fake to me, but I haven't caught one in a long time. Is that a poodle in your picture? Looks just like my Cooper!! Sorry, I know nothing about trees other than how to kill them, but I just might take up archery. That looks like fun!!
ReplyDeleteThat little poodle is Somer and Lily's little baby. She does so many things that you have described in your blogs that I think they must be related!
DeleteNo advice on the apple trees--voles girdled our apple trees one winter and we gave up. AI worries me--a lot! The fishing trip looks fun, garage building and grouting not so much but it must be done! I bet the archery event at the Park was fun! Is your son and his family leaning toward staying in your area?
ReplyDeleteNope, they are leaving soon. Why you ask? Too windy! Among other reasons, but that is one of the top reasons.
DeleteWind is a big factor for us too. It was sooooo windy all the time in Pearce, AZ. Wickenburg is much better for no wind. Big Timber, MT is known for its wind but up the Boulder south of there where we summer, we don't get as much wind.
DeleteAI! Every time I open Word, I'm asked what I want to write. It irritates me, but I can see that some people could be tempted to let AI take over. It's easier than thinking, right? Very wise of Wyoming to try and avoid importing invasive species - they do such a lot of damage to the ecosystem.
ReplyDeleteThe fish look wonderful.
I can only imagine how lazy the next generation is going to be not having to think or use their imagination to write a paper, blog or really anything.
DeleteHey Jim....we are in the Nursery Business (way down here in Texas). My husband grows thousands of Apple trees each year...He said it looks like June bugs (do y'all have them up there?) OR caterpillars. My kiddos can detect an AI photo immediately. I will show them something and they will say "not true, its AI." Speaking of AI, my oldest daughter is a High School Counselor and she laughs at all the messages and paperwork that the kids send her...totally AI. Poor Zoey and Barb...must have been a long night for both as they were apart. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe do have June bugs, but I have not seen any recently. Do I spray? Leave them alone? Overall, the trees look good, but I do not want them to get any worse.
DeleteI can just imagine those kids thinking they are so crafty and smart, just like we used to so as kids when I faked my mom's signature for an absence note!
Great contests!
ReplyDeleteAI...not a fan. Robot authors, acting as people in videos, composing music, creating art, any of it...gives me the creeps. Your fish pic...looks so perfect I suppose it could be AI...awk!! But you don't have extra fingers or hands. What do I know...shudders.
Exactly, how are we to know what is real and what is fake anymore?!?!?!
DeleteGood morning, I think I am happy that I am old enough not wanting AI for myself. I see where it can be fun and entertaining but going forward how does know what is real or not. On facebook I saw an AI video with cats doing olympic high dives-that was too funny and had to share. that I know is not real haha
ReplyDeleteIt is good that you are both balancing hard work with fun-that is important-we always forgot about the fun part-working too hard.
Happy weekend we are now in the mid 90"s with high humidity here in the ozarks
I am with you on the age thing, we've seen enough change in our lives, we don't need a lot more. I am just fine if things stay the way they are.
Deletei have such mixed emotions about AI, a great topic for conversation!! i feel a little foolish as i am "gullible" and think everything is real. it can be a little overwhelming, interesting but some of it can be upsetting. i'm no expert but you may have beetles!!
ReplyDeleteI think we need to be a little more questioning and ask ourselves the question, "Is this real?" whenever we see a picture that is suspect. In the past, it has always been obvious, not so much anymore.
Deletei agree!!!
DeleteI totally agree with Janna…the fishing and archery event sound likes loads of fun…the garage roof and grouting, not so much! AI says that “you should be co concerned that something is eating the leaves on your apple tree if it is extensive damage. This will harm the trees health and fruit production”. I am banking the fish is real so don’t disappoint us! The last pic of Zoey is awesome. I love her face and eyes! Also Jim, I have sad news. Jeff, Ruffin it with Rufus, has passed away. His wife Fran said they were camping at Fossil Falls and he went for a walk, collapsed, and died…probabally a heart attack. He and Fran were very good friends of ours. He will be very missed and I pray God holds Fran close.
ReplyDeleteVery sad news about Jeff. Although I never met him in person, we were blog friends following each other's adventures for quite a while. My heart goes out to his friends and family.
DeleteI don’t ever want AI to take over my writing. No fun in that! But I do put an art print together every now and again, when I can’t find what I am looking for, and a poem. One for tomorrow as a matter of fact. I have very mixed emotions on the topic. I feel very uneasy about it all. I am thinking teachers will be having a time of it when their students turn in their homework. I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with this. Glad you were able to enjoy some fun time after your hard work. I am a novice on apple trees and the like. Hope someone can help. Pups are so cute!
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy your AI created images. That is one aspect of it that I would like to learn more about.
DeleteMy wife and I tent camped at Glendo for years. Red Hills is the best followed by Custer Cove. I would guess you were at one of the sites closer to the marina. You picked a good year. We endured 40 degree lows in a tent a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe stayed in Whiskey Gulch mainly because it had a boat ramp. Then we toured each of the campgrounds while we were there. For us, we will probably look for sites where we can tuck the boat into a cove so we do not have to take it out every day.
DeleteThat’s a great AI picture of Barb riding Zoey, and the one of you holding a fish is definitely AI. I’ve never tried archery but it sure looks like a blast!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Wow, do you think the fish picture is AI because it looks fake or because you do not think I can catch a fish that big?!?!?!
DeleteI’m sure eventually you’ll catch a fish that big, it’s just that he’s much better looking. 🤣
DeleteI have one word for you about AI. Skynet. That photo of you and the fish, AI. Now that you use AI, I cannot believe a word you say or a photo I see. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteWow, it is hard to believe that you believe what I wrote in the first place!
DeleteAI can be very useful when applied appropriately, I'm using it at work on a daily basis, automating some routine tasks and administrative tasks. But, it can also be very distorted and provide some wild answers, so common sense is needed. Which honestly worries me, it seems like so many people are lacking commonsense which makes AI truly frightening.
ReplyDeleteInteresting about your routine tasks. I have used it a couple times to look things up like the minimum walleye size on Glendo Reservoir. It gave me an answer that I know was wrong so went directly to the game and fish website for the right answer.
DeleteI have dabbled in AI but not in attempting to create realistic pictures. Mine don’t look realistic at all by intention. I have used it as a research aide but never buy it without verification, much like anything I read online these days.
ReplyDeleteThus, without verification, I think your big fish picture is fake. The fish doesn’t have enough shadowing.
Ain't that the truth, you need to look at everything with a skeptical eye nowadays!
DeleteDo they charge you to sanitize your boat? If no, I suspect that they charge in the future. On our recent trip to Yellowstone
ReplyDeleteI saw at least 6 boat checks in both WY and Idaho.
They did not, but I could see them charging in the future. Personally, I think it would diminish the fishing in Wyoming as I have already run into people who do not fish there just because have the free check stations.
DeleteBarb can probably attest to the fact you’ve been using A/I on your fishing trips for years! On the same subject: I crack up at the ads with A/I people talking to each other. They look real enough, but their mouths and eyebrows don’t quite sync. I guess it saves on hiring real actors.
ReplyDeleteYou mean I was AI even before there was AI?!?! I am not a super fan of those commercials, but you are right, it is probably saving a ton of money.
DeleteHow fun the archery sounds. Fishing even better. I’d have to guess that picnic you is AI as the fish looks. “plastic-y” and I think that top fin would be flat and not up?
ReplyDeleteMaybe that fish got plastic-y surgery, did you ever consider that?!?!?
DeleteAlso, the rules in CA are even more crazy. Once out the boat is out of the water it has a tag put on it and it cannot go to a different lake for 30 days!
ReplyDeleteThat seems a little ridiculous, if is before 30 days in Wyoming they do the decon for free and you are free to launch again.
DeleteI've created a few AI pictures for Halloween and Christmas but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI took a semester of archery back in high school it was so much fun.
I should take a semester of AI, then I will know all the ins and outs of it!
DeleteI have used AI, via the Playground app. I used it just for fun, using pics of my granddaughters, me and husband. I got bored of it fast. My husband talks to Gemini from time to time. He says Gemini has helped him create spreadsheet formulas. My husband finds it useful.
ReplyDeleteDid you see on the news last week that some guy proposed to his AI girlfriend? she accepted, and he cried. Here is the kicker, he is already married, how is that going to work?!!?
DeleteThe fishing looks good if that big one is any indication. Well done to that fisherperson!
ReplyDeleteBut is that big one real, that is the question!
DeleteGreat post and wonderful photos...and I like the humour you added to a few! Ahhhh...to be in or on the water. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to spend a few days on the water! I think Barb enjoyed it a little more than I did as it was her first time fishing in the new boat!
DeleteI hate AI and have not attempted to use it. You are right about that one commenter, I think. Pretty sure hers are AI responses.
ReplyDeleteHowever, even though i don't like AI, I do enjoy when it's used for comic effect, like Barb riding the dog!
Your trip to Wyoming sounds like a wonderful break from steel and stone work. And the archery? That's interesting. I have a neighbor who would love to do that with his son.
Stay cool this week, Jim!
I agree with you about the AI used for comic effect. that is where I enjoy it the most myself. You were the only person to comment about that commentor, that is the area that concerns me the most about AI; generating material whether it be responses or supposedly original material.
DeleteOh, about the apple trees, this site has pretty extensive information. Maybe too much! But you might find an answer here. https://orchardpeople.com/when-to-spray-apple-trees/
ReplyDeleteThanks, I have not checked them in a couple of days. I need to get down there today and see if there is any more damage.
DeleteYour apple trees need to be sprayed. Check with your local County Extension office, they will know or point you in the right direction. Ai drives my English Teacher daughter nuts as the kids use it and try to pull the wool over her eyes. I think your photo of the fish is Ai. Nice work on your shed, you are almost done with the grout project!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine the frustration your daughter must have. I am also guessing that 90% of the items are obviously AI and puts her in a position to have to address the issue.
DeleteThe garage is coming along well! Nice work! As for AI -- I am NOT a fan. I worry that our kids will never learn how to do comprehensive research or write well with that and how very much it can distort reality and the news. Some of it is frighteningly real (I just saw some videos of Harry, Meghan, their kids and Charles being happy families) -- wishful thinking maybe, but what can you trust? (Although I have to say, I do love Barb/Chloe!).
ReplyDeleteIf something is showing Harry, Meghan, their kids and Charles being happy families, we certainly know it is AI!!!!!!
DeleteAI generated photos and text? I am so not a fan of either. I know that a lot of bloggers include AI images in their posts, sometimes that's ALL they include. Maybe, it's just so they can have a post that day, which doesn't always seem necessary to me, but different strokes and all that and it's their choice. I find that I will rarely comment on such a post but wait until some actual text post is done. That's OK with me because it's can be hard to keep up with daily bloggers and I was guilty of the same many years ago.
ReplyDeleteGarage is looking good from what you showed and glad that you and Barb had some fun time. The story about the boat being decontaminated was interesting. I suspect your fish catch was AI generated, but it is wasn't, kudos to you, Jim.
I have been seriously lacking in my blog reading recently. With everything we have going on I find it hard to find the time!
DeleteLots of work and play here, ha, enjoyed it. I'm not entirely confident, but I think the fish pic is AI because the clouds seem perfect?
ReplyDeletePerhaps I caught the perfect fish?!?!
DeleteHi Jim and Barb, beautiful photos of your adverture. Have a nice evening !
ReplyDeleteThank you Caroline!
DeleteI don't know from apple tree leaves or fishing firsts but I can say with specificity that AI nauseates me. The mere thought of it terrifies me. I do not like it, I will not use it, and I wish it would go away. Oh and that picture of you with the fish is definitely AI, hahahaha! Oh and the grout is looking good! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAre you sure? You seem to be on the fence with this issue. Ha! Actually, I totally agree with you.
DeleteHere in the northern hills we have had a massive infestation of tent caterpillars. I have to keep a close eye on my orchard. They can de-leaf a tree in a day. All I have to say about AI is this: It can write a poem, a song, paint, or be creative with a photos. Why isn't it washing dishes, mopping the floor, or doing laundry so I can enjoy doing those relaxing creative things with my brain?
ReplyDeleteNow, those are some aspects of AI that I could support! I have not seen any caterpillars or other leaf eating critters on our trees. I guess I will have to take a closer look.
DeleteI’ve used AI a bit, and it’s definitely a wild ride—some of those image results are hilarious! That one of Barb on the dog made me laugh out loud. And hey, those fish look pretty impressive to me! I bet Zoey wasn’t too thrilled about staying behind... poor girl probably missed her people like crazy.
ReplyDeleteZoey's reaction when we got home was just bizarre. It was like she was afraid of us, she approached very cautiously until she got up close and sniffed us. Then she went crazy.
DeleteSounds like an epic walleye showdown!** 🎣🔥 Love the friendly competition—nothing beats that back-and-forth battle for "biggest fish" bragging rights. Tying for most fish is the perfect ending (though we all know that 18"er was the real champ 😉). New lake jitters make the win even sweeter—way to crack the code! Can’t wait to hear about the next adventure. Who’s buying the celebratory fries? 🍟🐟
ReplyDeleteWell, you are in luck then as the next adventure starts in 10 days!
DeleteI'm not a fan of AI, in fact it has made me very skeptical of all pictures on line. One just never knows if they are the real thing.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're having a great summer so far. Hope that trend continues.
Us too! We are working hard these next two weeks so we can enjoy some time off on the water!
Delete
