And So It Begins

 What begins you ask?

I'll get to that in a moment, but first, you will be happy to know that we had our first snowfall!

This means that the woodland creatures have the much-needed moisture they need to survive. We received about 5" which also means something else. It means we can burn some of our slash piles! We need a minimum of 2" to burn anything here, and we have a dozen or so slash piles scattered across the property as a result of cutting down trees and just basically cleaning up the forest. I was able to burn two before the winds picked up and just made it too sketchy to burn any more.

With Thanksgiving behind us it is time to turn our eyes and focus on Christmas, and so it begins. It's Hallmark movie time! It's Christmas music time! It is Christmas decoration time! And it is Christmas tree time!

That last one is one I personally look forward and dread all at the same time. The last few years we have been going out to the National Forest and cutting down our own tree. All you have to do is get a $10 permit from the Forest Service, follow a few simple rules and you get a tree at a fraction of the price of one bought at a store or nursery.

Why dread it then? Barb has to have the "perfect" tree (much like she had to find the perfect husband!) and as such we have to search the woods high and low looking for the perfect tree. I do not care if you find it in the first 5 minutes, you need to spend the next hour looking at every other tree in the area to make sure that first one is "The One". I am just glad she did not follow this same philosophy when selecting me!

Years ago, when the kids were young, mom would say "Let's go pick out a tree". They would groan knowing that it was a multi-mile death march up and down every row of trees at the local tree farm.

Last year was no different when Forrest, Somer and Lily were here and the girls got to experience it for the first time. Lily tapped out after 30 minutes saying she was cold, Somer 15 minutes later when she said she was going to check on Lily.

Would this year be any different? 39 years of history tell me no, but off we went on our search. She would approach a tree, study it on all sides and give it a thumbs up or thumbs down.

15 minutes into our search, she said, "This one looks good". Be still my heart, could she have found one in the first 15 minutes?!?!? But off she went into the forest looking at other trees just to make sure. She returned 5 minutes later to that same tree and said, "This one". You did not have to tell me twice; I had that puppy cut down in 30 seconds afraid she would change her mind.

Barb drug it down the hill to the base, we loaded it into the truck, and we were back on the road in 30 minutes! This is by far the biggest tree we have gotten so far, coming in at 15' or so. We did not measure it, but Barb is on a 12' ladder, and it extends well above that. That tree would have been well over $200 at a nursery.

Barb then set about decorating the rest of the house. Her philosophy is "less is more", not going overboard, just enough to bring a touch of Christmas to the house.

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The snow brought a different element to deer hunting as well. Cold and bright. I love it!

The rut is still on with bucks looking for the does that have not been bred yet. This picture show one of those bucks (far left) keeping his eye on a doe laying down (far right) that apparently wants nothing to do with him.

Be warned that this post does contain a picture of a dead deer. It is a pretty tame one though. No, I did not get one, but our daughter did! As many of you know, Jessica and her daughter Kendall hit the Pennsylvania woods each fall in search of meat to fill the freezer. This year was no different. Even though Kendall (Baby K to us) is a year older, she still falls asleep in the deer woods.
But Jessica woke her up when this meaty doe walked by and Jessica made a perfect shot! So proud of our baby girl that she is out there enjoying the woods, passing on the hunting culture and providing meat for the family. With the prices of beef recently it helps cut down on the grocery bill too! Although, truth be told, pound for pound deer hunting probably costs a lot more than beef in the store.
That's it for this week, hope all of you have a great week and a joyous holiday season!

  1. Hello,
Great photos of the deer and turkey. I am glad Barb found a tree quickly.
It looks big and beautiful. The Decorations look lovely too, I agree with less is more.
Congratulations to your daughter and her perfect shot. Beef prices are crazy!
Take care, enjoy your day and a happy week ahead.

  2. Yup that's a VERY tall tree!! I've gone the way of artificial. Makes it easy to find the perfect tree every single year since it lives in the garage. BTW ... don't you do the same with THE SPECIAL BUCK? Congrats Jessica!!! Next comes the hard work of dressing it out. Looks like it's going to be a GREAT Christmas!!

  3. Your tree and beautiful home remind me of a Hallmark Movie…I love your tree! And kudos to Barb for always finding the perfect tree! The snow sure adds a lot to Christmas as well! Congrats to Jessica…she has good genes!

  4. Nothing spreads the joy of honoring our baby savior like going out in the woods to slaughter/sacrifice a living tree in his name. LOL. Not to mention taking the home of some poor little critter. Did your warm house wake up all the bugs living in it? I prefer to unbox our tree that we have used for years made of carbon, oil produced plastic and iron ore that had to be melted down in China and shipped thousand of miles to bring us joy and the holiday spirit. So I guess we are pretty much alike. Merry Christmas you "R" word.

    1. God provided the deer for us to survive, and we must harvest them to prevent over population otherwise disease would run rampant throughout the forest.
The cutting of the Christmas tree is just us doing our part to thin the woods, reducing the risk of fire, bug infection and give much needed sunlight to the seedlings under that tree.

  5. Putting meat on the table I can understand, for sure.
That is a perfect tree for the space, though. Tall and thin. I hope you show it in its full glory. Sounds like it was your lucky tree year! ;)

    1. That was what really drew Barb to that tree, it was tall, but not wide. There is no way we have room for a wide tree.

  6. Well done Jessica. Now that's a tree! It will beautiful decorated. I could put one up that tall .... but it would interfer with Ray's Christmas Village. lol We are having the local daycare bring the kiddo's over on Dec 19th to see the villages, have a snack, do some colouring and story time. (probably 16 of the litte elves) Should be a fun couple of hours. Christmas is all about the kids :)

  9. I agree with many of the above comments - our tree lives all dressed and ready to go in the guest room closet. I admire the gumption it took to dress a 15' tree. Yay, Hallmark movies!

  11. Ok JIM, you should try this next year...go out the night before, tie a bottle of Screwdriver Peanut Butter Whiskey to a tree, when she sees that tree...the saga ends, the story is ready to be told! (Yes, I bought one, tried it, and OMG!!!!) lol

  14. You have the space for a huge tree. I love it. WE go to the tree farm, and I'm one those let's look around first, but this year the taller trees (like 6-7 feet) trees at this farm were fewer, so we found a good one and took it. And it's perfect. :) Have a super week and stay warm.

  15. It looks fantastic! I love the greens and Barb's arrangements. And getting the tree! We haven't had a real one in a long while and I miss it, with very fond memories of finding one, picking it out! And you found the perfect one. Wishing you a very merry December!

  18. That is some tree! Beautiful too. How do you keep it from drying out? I developed an allergy to live trees in the house about 15 years ago, so annoying. But I sure like yours.

    1. Oh no! That sucks, especially if you like live trees as I imagine you do. We add water every day to the stand, it dries up by the end of the season but a few minutes of vacuuming the needles takes care of that.

    1. Your comment reminded me of my childhood when we used to burn piles of leaves. I get it, there are so many idiots out there right now, I would not want them burning anything either.

  21. I’m glad my wife doesn’t have such discerning tastes or I would likely still be single. We’ve always cut a wild tree for the cost of not one penny. Although we’ve done our fair share of marching in the past to find the nicest one, this year I literally went behind our house and cut one out of our ditch, likely the sprout from the seed of a past tree we cut and used. It is a bit of a Charlie Brown tree but it doesn’t take up much space and didn’t need a lot to fully decorate it. We maybe spent 30 minutes and it was in the stand and decorated. A new record for us,

    1. No doubt she had a weak moment when she met me. We have had our share of Charlie Brown trees as well. Those were also as special as our current tree. We love this time of year!

  22. How great that you can get to go and select the perfect tree or rather that Barb can. It reminded me of the Griswalds doing the same in Christmas Vacation and maybe you also watch that film, Jim. We always had a live tree in our NJ and VA homes and up until a few years ago, it was allowed in the mill apts. And, the year we wanted to get one, they were banned. Thanks for sharing yours here.

    1. What the heck, why would they ban live Christmas trees? How about you go get a live potted 3' one from Home Depot, they shouldn't have a problem with that!

  23. I think many women are like that with shopping. They find the good thing but then keep on looking because the next thing might be gooder. Anyway, that tree is pretty darn awesome.

I didn’t know about the slash piles and snow.

  24. Definitely feels like Christmas at your place. Glad Barb was able to find a "fast" tree and avoid traumatizing the family :-) Can one embrace 'less is more' with a 15' tree?? I think yes as her decor is just perfect for your beautiful home. Congrats to Jessica getting her deer.

  27. I love it!! It? the fact that you all go out as a family and cut down your own tree. We did this when I was a kid. My dad would choose the date for us to load up and go find the tree. I also love that the tree is 15 feet tall. And...I would be just like Barb. I would want to make sure that I had selected the perfect tree. those are some pretty good looking deer. Hopefully you will get one...

    1. We didn't check for bugs, but thankfully none have shown up. I wonder if that is more of a warmer climate issue as we have never experienced bugs in our trees.

  30. The picking out of the Christmas Tree was always a fun time though no trip in the forest and cutting down just all the tree lots. You never know there could be better ones at the next lot. Then there was the positioning to the perfect side when you put it up. It does look like a great choice, good job Barb. I miss those days, Tom probably not so much...lol
