Strange Happenings

There are some strange things going on around here. I was walking by the bathroom the other day, I hear Barb having a full-on conversation behind the closed door. What?!?! Who the hell talks on their phone in the bathroom? Then I walk into the kitchen and see her phone on the counter. A minute later the bathroom door opens up and out walks Zoey followed by Barb. Actually, that is a pretty regular occurrence as Zoey just follows Barb pretty much everywhere. If Barb is able to sneak into the bathroom without her, this usually occurs.
Momma, let me in!
Strange thing #2. According to our "plan" we are supposed to be up in North Dakota right now helping plant the spring crop. Last year at this time we were a couple of days into planting. But 30+ inches of snow up there changed that in a hurry. Here are a couple of pictures Dylan took from up there.

So needless to say we are in a holding pattern down here waiting for word that the fields are ready. In the meantime, we are getting a few things done around the house. The odd thing about it is that we have to think of things to do rather than look around and see an over abundance of things that need to get done. Barb and I both focused on the dresser this week and got it done! After making the drawer fronts last week, Barb put several coats of varnish on them while I worked on the top.

The top consists of 3 pieces of 2" blue pine slabs, the front one has a live edge on it. I cut them to length, notched them to fit and put them in place and glued them together. Once the glue was dry, Barb sanded and varnished them.
Dresser top ready to be finished!
The last step was to put on the drawer fronts and we were done!

I can now see why custom furniture is so expensive. We have $400 into wood and another $200 into drawer slides. It was an interesting project and I learned a lot about what to do and not do next time.

I was also able to sneak away for a day and help Kevin install Dan and Bonnie's countertop so now they have a functional kitchen!

All Done!

One day we had a group of 15 mule deer stop by for a visit. We have not seen that many in quite a while. Two of the bucks still had their antlers. Well, I should say 1 1/2 of the bucks still had their antlers as the bigger one was missing one side.

Zoey got jealous when Barb was taking pictures of the deer so she insisted that we get her picture with one.
Barb and I have been out several more times looking for shed antlers but have yet to find any. We have been going several miles away from home where we have seen the elk in the past. You would think with the thousands of elk and tens of thousands of deer we would trip over one eventually but so far nothing. It is good to get out and walk the hills though!

I think all the cattle are done having their calves, so there are lots of babies on the property. Which brings me to strange thing #3. These cows seem to congregate around certain manmade items. In our case it has been the windmill, old water tank and the front gate by the cattle guard. It is like they have a meeting in the morning and say "Okay, after breakfast, we all split up. 10 go to the front gate, 1/3rd to the water tank and the rest to the windmill." They are such odd animals.

Easter morning I woke up, stumbled out of the bedroom and Barb greeted me with a big smile and said "Happy Easter, time to find your basket!" Really? I have been up for like 30 seconds and you want to play games with me?!?!? Actually, I love that she does this and before I knew it I found it and was high on a sugar rush!
Strange thing #4 is that my phone died last week and I lost all my contacts. I was able to recover some from Barb's phone but I am still missing many of my friends and even family members.  So, here is my PSA for the week. If you have not received a call or text from me lately and you have my phone number starting with (385) 335-xxxx can you please send me a text with your name and phone number so I can get you back in my contacts? Please include your name in your text!

Lastly, I got a personal note from my good friend Harry saying how much he missed the dog videos so I included 40 seconds of pure love for your viewing pleasure!

It is amazing how Zoey can go from 90 to 0 in a matter of seconds. When I stopped recording, she walked over to the dog bed and she was down!

  1. That's some major snow in ND. They may have snow until June. The dresser is beautiful. Definitely some fine craftsmanship there. Poor Dakota. She does take some abuse from Zoey. How sweet of the Easter Bunny to leave you a basket.

    1. Dakota really does enjoy playing with Zoey. She is often the instigator of it and if she does not want to play, she can put an end to it in a hurry.

  2. Good thing you got a new phone, because I heard your car warranty was about up

    1. Which is exactly why we have phones with 385 areas codes. We do not know anyone with a 385-area code so if we receive a call from that area, we know it is spam!

  3. That is a nice basket of goodies you got ! I'm sure you will enjoy it all :) Our corgi follows my husband around and gets a bit offended if locked out of the bathroom :) Hope the weather cooperates for you soon so you can go on with the plans you have made!

    1. They got another 4-6" up there yesterday with more in the forecast so it looks like it is going to be a while yet!

  4. Your new dresser is beautiful! And I love the photo of Zoey with the deer outside. It’s really weird to see how cold it is there and it was 89 degrees here in Tucson today!

    1. I bet it is hard to imagine that it is cold, windy and snowy up here with it being so hot down there. We are not ready for 89 but would take a few days in the 60's!

  5. Funny you said that about animals. On our trip today from Bakersfield to Citrus Heights, we saw a large flock of sheep...and they were crowding under an 18 wheeler trailer that is being used as an advertising gimmick. The temps were in the mid-60's, no rain, a clear but slightly windy day. And a hundred or more sheep were all crowding under this trailer. Later we came upon a heard of cows, there were two shade trees...they ALL gathered under the one tree for which they all cannot fit under, but not one cow under the neighboring tree, just a few yards away. Go figure....

    1. So, I did a little research. The main reason cattle group together is for protection of themselves and their young. They often of different social groups so you will see the same group together while not allowing others to join. Then there is the whole seeking shade or cooler areas thing but why they all try to crowd around on trailer or tree is beyond me!

  6. It's been snowing here in MN at least once a week. This will be the never ending winter. Next year we may just have to go somewhere warm for sure. Sorry but I did not open the video. It's called will power Harry.

    1. What do you have against cute, lovable dogs? If it was a cat, you would have opened it!

  7. Country living is so much different compared to what the town folks see. Sure is baffling why the cattle do certain things but interesting. You have great skills not only building a beautiful house but fine furniture to boot. That cabinet turned out great and yes, hardware and exotic wood can be expensive. Keep that photo of Zoey with the deer in the background!

    1. We really liked the way it turned out. We could have gone with cheaper wood and hardware but a cabinet maker friend of ours said buying better material and hardware is definitely worth it.

  8. The furniture is gorgeous!! Cattle congregate ... safety in numbers. There's always one leader with two or three subordinates. They are the ones leading everyone to different spots. Zoey is just adorable ... Queen Bee me thinks, since she's always the one on top chewing the ears!! Cooper is my shadow ... can't go anywhere without him following. Wish I had a small fraction of your handyman skills ... or Barb's for that matter!!!

    1. Dakota is submissive to everything. She won't even retrieve an aggressive duck.
I have not studied the cows enough to see which ones are the leaders but they sure are nice to have in the scenery!

  9. Great job on the dresser/nook, it came out beautifully. Glad your project list is winding down a bit. Just say no to more snow! As always, kudos for helping others get their projects done.

    1. We still have a couple of big outside projects but we really do not want to jump into anything big right now so they will wait until fall.

  10. That wood for the dresser looks amazing. Great job you two. We are so done with the cold weather and skiffs of snow and then I see your picture of North Dakota and call myself a wuss. lol

  11. The dresser turned out gorgeous, kind of like everything you two do! Amazing the $$ spent isn't it?! What a beautiful kitchen Dan and Bonnie have...jealous here LOL. The North Dakota picture is something else..guess it will be a bit before you get up there, but nice not to be on a schedule!Great picture of Barb with the beautiful scenery in the background :)

  15. Hey - if you find any of those antlers, can you do me a favor and stick a postage stamp on one and drop it in a mailbox for me? Thor loves chewing on them and they cost a FORTUNE at the pet store! Maybe that's why you can't find any. Petsmart is picking them all up. Jerks. :)

Hope you get to see Spring soon!

    1. That is why shed hunting is such a big thing around here. The store in town will pay $160/lb for fresh sheds. The one Barb found last year was over 10 pounds, but we did not sell it. As I am writing this Zoey is chewing on one we found last year.

  16. Noticed on the weather map the blizzard activity up there. The map sure gets a lot smaller when you travel fulltime. It's fun recognizing the area from past trips.

    1. Isn't that the truth, especially when your plans are specific, and you cannot deviate from them. In the past we would just change our plans and go someplace warmer, but we cannot do that in this case!

  17. You have your own personal Easter Bunny, how fun. Do you do anything for Barb at Easter? Your new bedroom dresser is simply perfect the space and your room in general. Isn't it fun learning new skills and expanding your mind.

  19. I laughed at the dog outside the bathroom door. When our grand-dog visits, she follows me everywhere and I talk to her too. Hope you find some of those antlers before your trip.

When you come to PEI, let me know and maybe we can meet for a walk on a beach and a picnic.

    1. Looks like we are leaving antler-less as we hit the road in a couple of day! What are some of the highlights on the island that are "must sees" for us?

  20. It seems like they were late planting here, corn is going in now, lots of rain this spring. Lots of calves on our route around the lake :)
