Waking Up

What time do you wake up in the morning? For me it varies, but it is almost always before 6am, sometimes much earlier. The first thing I do when I wake up is try and guess what time it is. More often than not, I can guess it within 10 minutes. Other times, I am way off.

First, I listen. If I don't hear birds, I know it is early and I should go back to sleep. Many mornings I cannot. If I do hear birds, I know it is at least 4am as that is when the little tweet-tweeters start tweeting. Then I open my eyes. Is it light out? The amount of light gives me my next clue of what time it is. The first vestiges of light take place about the same time as the tweeters. The lighter it is, the later my guess.

This morning I woke up when there was no light. I guessed 3:30. I was 12 minutes off at 3:42. When my internal clock is off, I will do this exercise only to find out it is something like 12:40am and try to go back to sleep. Sometimes my brain will let me, sometimes it will not. If it does not, I will ever so quietly go to the closet and grab my robe and a blanket. As I am sliding the door closed (it is a sliding barndoor), Barb will often say, "You are not a church mouse". Other times she will say, "Seriously?", to which I would say, "I am a church mouse". To which she will say, "You are not a church mouse".

I will then go out to the couch sit in the recliner and either try to get back to sleep, work on the blog, or just watch TV. Sometimes I will take sit in the hot tub and enjoy sound of the tweeters.

I have a friend who will remain nameless, but you read his name in almost every blog, who on several occasions as gotten up, made himself breakfast, ate it, got ready for work only to find it is like 12:30am and he does not have to be to work until 7!

At some point, I may fall back asleep for a bit, usually for 30-60 minutes before I am up for the day. And there you have it, my morning routine probably 5 out of 7 days. The other two days I sleep until 6ish, now those are good days!

Barb was busy working on her landscaping this week. We borrowed Neighbor Jim's dump trailer and went to the rock store and got some landscaping rock.

Barb also made a rolling rack for our kayaks so we can move them out of the way and load them easier.

We also spent an afternoon at Neighbor Jim and Carmen's helping them put trusses up over their garden. You see, there is so much hail here that most gardens have some kind of covering over them. Jim and Carmen are expanding their garden, putting trusses over it and then laying hardware wire over the top.

Now, that is going to be a garden!

I continued work on my deer blind. It is basically done, I am just waiting on the plexiglass to come in. The stuff they carried at the store was not thick enough. I wanted 1/4" plexi and had to order it online.

In the fun category we went over to Kevin and Cheryl's for supper one night. Kevin's mom came up from Arizona for the week so we went to see her. Well into her 80's, she is a sweet woman and a joy to visit.

We also got out fishing again! Same lake as last week. A beautiful day, 80 degrees, light wind and the fish were biting.

While our target species was walleye, we caught 3 different species as well; crappie, smallmouth bass, and catfish.

I know many of you are wondering who caught the biggest and who caught the most but the thing you understand is that fishing is really a team sport and keeping track of things like that are really unimportant and if you really think about it, petty, so on this day I am going to say there was no outright better fisherperson. We are just going to move on and focus on other things.  Overall, we caught dozens of fish, keeping 5 walleye for the supper table.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there. We both miss our dads to this day. My dad has been gone over 26 years; he would have been 100 this year. Barb's dad has been gone for 14 years now and would have been 88 this year.

Here is your dose of cuteness for the week. While the baby fawn did not return for a visit, some other forest friends did in the form of a baby squirrel and bunny!

Then there is Ms. Maisie......we can pick her up in less than 5 weeks!

Have a great week!

  1. I awoke near to 5 this morning but managed to get a few more winks until closer to 6. That doesn’t always happen, but it is nice when it does. I have clocks and watches close by, so there is no guessing, and I can’t hear the birds anyway until my hearing aids go in and that doesn’t occur until after Sue gets up.This morning at 7:20, she is still abed although she often arises much earlier in summer.

  3. Your sleep routine sounds pretty similar to my husband's and mine experiences. We have blackout curtains and a sleep mask to combat the early light. Because if it's getting light, my internal clock says time to get up. And when that happens at 5 am these days, I haven't had enough sleep.

    1. We have not tried the blackout curtains or masks. The birds are waking up a little later now, like 4:20. I guess they like their sleep as well!

  4. My body wakes up almost everyday at 5:00-5:05. I need to get up....I'd love to stay sleeping. I'm awake, by the time I go ...ahaha. My mom, would say, "I get up to pee all night" - ughhh I get it now. You both seem to have such full days with each other - that is a true blessing.

  5. I don't think my blogger feed stays up to date all that well because I never saw the postwar with your visitor. Very cute and so is the little bunny. Maisie is very cute and so little still. She'll be different in 5 weeks. You must be excited. And dogs change quickly (well people too) but not really as fast as dogs. And its been another good week. Have a great Father's Day and week ahead.

  6. We both wake up when that dang flicker starts banging on our house or metal roof--sometimes it's 4am which makes me want to find the gun and sometimes it's 5am. I will have to use the "church mouse" comment on Mike--he thinks he's a church mouse! Hope you guys get rain this week!

  7. Awww love the baby critters, including the pup! I got a clock that shines the time on the ceiling. I don't even have to roll over. Unfortunately, my wake clock is pretty accurate ... between 4 and 4:05 every morning. And women always win the fishing contests ..... just say'n!

And it will just get prettier! I love the little baby bunny. Maisie is the cutest little bundle of fur! I know you both are counting down the days and can’t wait! Happy Fathers’ Day! 10. Hello,
I am a light sleeper and wake up at any noise. 3 days a week my alarm is set for 3:45, I am up early for hubby's dialysis. Other days I try to sleep later but I am usually awake at 5am. Love the cute critters, the bunny and your Maisie are sweeties. Happy Father's Day to you! Take care, enjoy your day and happy week ahead.

  11. As I have gotten older I don't well any more, sometimes I just read a book til I totally fall asleep I usually don't get much more than 6 hours though and I think I need more.
You two have a good balance of work projects and fun. Husband and I never did that well-I worked soooo many hours of overtime with the phone co back then, and Husband always had a business going-which I would help out sometimes. Now that we are seniors Husband's body is given out and can't get out of the house to do anything fun at all anymore.
Always keep the fun times going-we missed out on that somehow. Happy Father's Day

  14. What a delightful post! Fishing, cute critters, an impending puppy, a fabulous canoe mover and good times with friends. I tend to wake between six and seven but during the winter months, once the clock goes back, I get an hour behind and wake between four and five for the next few months. And I hate it!

  18. I can sleep in better in the winter- this time of year, I can forget about sleeping in due to how early the light creeps into our bedroom. And the birdies seem to chirp quite early too. I'm awake most mornings around 5:30. Hardware wire to protect plants due to hail sounds extraordinary to me- I mean the need for it due to hail. I didn't know some areas of the country were known for getting hail. Your area must get it pretty bad for that kind of effort to protect plants. I sure hope it's effective! HFD!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We were not aware of the amount of hail this area received prior to moving here. We usually get hail every couple of weeks and damaging hail 2-3 times a year. Which explains why our comprehensive and windshield insurance is double everywhere else in the country!

  19. Nice post and it won't be long now till your puppy can be collected, what a great day that will be.
Nice photos, love the look of those fish, I buy mine fresh down the road at the shop, they come in iced boxes.
I go to bed late as I find there is so much to do at night :) so it's usually around 12.30 to 1am, sleep till 9am, up and shower but I like in the city not in the country. Of course I get up earlier if required. Used to get up at 5am when on duty at the hospital and before that.
    Take care.

  23. FISHING....that is something I really never took to with all my heart, not even half of it. My dad was a big fisherman, brought them home and cleaned them. Mom made him do that outside on the brick wall. I saw many heads cut off and then all of a sudden I developed a allergy to fish. My mouth would itch inside, and my lips would get twice as big as they should be. Fish night, I had fried frozen fish and no reaction. Does grass not grow in that hill? I like the rocks and stuff.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That hill is mostly rock with much of it exposed with soil packed between them. Barb was able to find several spots with enough soil to get the junipers planted. She has now found several more and is itching to get a couple more!

  28. I too can usually guess the time when I wake up, which is several to many times a night. But for some reason, by around 5 or 6 am I often finally fall into a deep sleep and hang in there til 7:30 or 8. Pain wakes me and I have to shift about, get up and walk, etc, many times most nights.
