Living where we do, we are in the heart of the celebration. Mount Rushmore a mere 45 minutes away is having a huge celebration; fireworks and events throughout the week. Are we going? Heck no! We are in peak tourist season here and we do not even go to town unless we absolutely have to. There are RV's everywhere clogging up the streets. Out of state license plates line Main Street and don't even think about going out to eat.
We did have to go to town however, to get a package at the post office. This might be foreign to many of you, but if you have a large package, we have to go to the post office to get it. No, the mailperson does not drive up to your door and drop it off. We do have an oversized mailbox which accommodates a lot of items but anything larger than that stays in at the post office and we have to drive 20 miles to go get it.
But Rushmore is not the only tourist attraction, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse are all within an hour of our house. Not mention The Badlands and Wall Drug a couple hours away. Yes, it is crazy around here right now.
Think about how our country has changed and grown in 250 years. The first thing that came to my mind was farming practices from the horse and oxen single plows of the 1700's, the first steam tractor in mid 1800's, gas tractors in the early 1900's to the air conditioned, nearly fully automated equipment of today.
Heck in our own lifetime we have seen the invention of computers, cell phones, and most importantly TV remote controls! I remember having to be the remote while I was a child, sitting next to the TV changing the channels as my dad said "Next, next, go back" as I flipped through the 6 or so stations, we had.
I wonder what the country will look like 250 years from now when our great, great, great grandchildren (I think I got that right) are alive. One thing I hope for is that that generation will look back at how we treated cancer with radiation and think how barbaric it was. Do you think people will even have babies naturally anymore? Or will they be grown in incubators? Seems weird to think about today, but it is conceivable (see what I did right there?!?!)
The 4th of July is especially special to us as it is the day that our daughter Jessica was born. It is hard to believe that our little girl is 45 years old! She is celebrating while on vacation in Myrtle Beach with her family and our son Forrest and his family.
But alas, we live in today, so let's talk about that. We are continuing to work on getting the woodshed filled. We are better than halfway, but the high temps really put a damper on our motivation.
Barb is about as far as she can get on the landscaping for now until we get more rock. She added two more juniper plants and some larger quartz chucks for some color.
Dan and Bonnie came over one afternoon; we smoked some salmon and played dice games.
They were down to their last few pennies, but they won and actually went home with some dollar bills in their pockets!
That weekend we drove to Spearfish to see Ryan and Alana and have a doggie playdate with Sophie and Loki. Ryan and Alana live on a golf course we spent the afternoon critiquing the golfers as the dogs played.
A few hours later the dogs were all tuckered out.
They were even tired on the way home!
I did get away for one solo adventure when I drove to central Wyoming to scout for elk for my hunting trip in October. Talk about remote country, I bet not many of you have heard of Lysite Wyoming. With a population of 80 it is the nearest town to where we will be hunting.
I have been applying for this tag for 9 years and finally got it! While checking out the area looking for a place to hunt this fall, I saw lots of wildlife, the most prominent being pronghorn antelope.
Next was mule deer. I ran across a group of bucks and got some really cool shots of them.

It is tourist season here too at the lake. Tubing the river is a huge draw. The weather for the past week has not been great so the crowds have been less. Our little grocery store, 5 minutes away, we stay away from except first thing in the morning to avoid crowds. How exciting getting a new puppy, a playmate for Zoey.
ReplyDeleteI bet the tubing is sh#tshow. We have daily thunderstorms somewhere in the hills but they are usually short-lived.
DeleteI totally alunderstand how bad the traffic can be during tourist season, but wait, we are some of those tourists all summer long as we're exploring new to us places. So we get to deal with the traffic all summer, get home and have about a month before we start getting overrun with snowbirds, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI know, but you should be the only tourists and everyone should stay out of your way!
DeleteHappy 4th of July! And happy birthday to your daughter. The dogs make me smile. Have a good day.
ReplyDeletePrepare for lots more smiles as there will be lots of puppy pictures in a few weeks!
DeleteI can why tourists would love you area.
ReplyDeleteThere is lots to do in this area for sure!
DeleteLook at me, remembering to comment!! I still can't believe I forgot to open the computer and comment last time after being such a faithful one for so long. Our Jessica was born June 1 and is also 45!! What a coincidence. Love the exhausted puppy photos. Good job, Jim!! You certainly do have a wildlife zoo at your place. So cool.
ReplyDeleteLord have mercy! Is your Jessica a nurse as well? Our just got promoted to Director of something at the hospital. We are so proud of her!
DeleteOur Jessica is following in her parents footsteps. She is a fifth grade teacher. Congratulations to your Jessica.
DeleteWhen we built our house nearly 41 years ago it was rural, and we still have our bit of acreage around us. For nearly 20 years our mail carrier would simply come down the driveway ( about)100 or so yards and leave anything that wouldnt fit in the mailbox! He retired, and went to work at DQ after the USPS added over a hundred stops to his route- no more money, no more time to deliver. Now they just throw it on the side of the road!
ReplyDeleteMan, you were in TV heaven! We didnt even have a TV till i was in the seventh grade, got two channels, had to go outside and turn the antenna to even pick them up!
I hope you've got room in one of your many outbuildings for the new freezer you're going to need for all that elk!
I surely would have thought you would have joined the crowd at Mt Rushmore last week:)
Happy Fourth of July!
We avoid crowds at all costs. I am thinking of buying a small freezer to take hunting with me and then use a generator to run it. Our postal carrier recently retired as well and we have a new one. The mail now shows up a couple hours earlier than before.
DeleteIt is very interesting to think what the future holds.
ReplyDeleteWe were supposed to have flying cars by now so probably nothing like we imagine.
DeleteA quick visit and I will come back to read properly real soon as I have missed visiting. I didn't want the day to end without wishing you and Barb a very Happy Fourth of July. I look forward to catching up with your adventures real soon :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! Hope you had a good 4th as well
DeleteWe hope to see some of those tourist areas in a few years during the shoulder season. Congrats on finally getting an Elk tag. Unbelievably all three of us forgot to apply for our Elk draws last month! You’ve got some great wildlife shots. Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck! You need to put that in your calendar as a reoccurring event.
DeleteOur area is still recovering from being voted as the most beautiful place in America by Good Morning America several years ago. Couple that with this year being the 100th anniversary of the National Cherry Festival…well, it’s very busy here in northern Michigan. Still wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the summer though…as I’m sure you can say the same about the Black Hills!
ReplyDeleteVery true, but I'd love to visit your area again!
DeleteGood morning Jim! It is amazing to me how quickly puppies grow and change from week to week. Maisie just gets cuter and cuter! Adventures are awesome…enjoy!
ReplyDeleteShe had one ear upright the other day. I am sure the other one will follow soon!
DeleteWay to go getting the Elk permit! Hope you are lucky enough to get one! My brother used to hunt in Wyoming but in a different area up in the Wyoming Mountains West of Big Piney. My Dad got to go along several times and it was an adventure for him. Boy your Maisie gets cuter all the time:) We have tourists here too for another month or so then it gets calmer.
ReplyDeleteI am already looking forward to October!
DeleteComplaining about the tourists, reminiscing about the past and wondering about the future. Are you old and in a nursing home or something? Next you will be telling us about your medications and how your knee aches when there's a change in the weather.
ReplyDeleteNo, I will leave that to you since you've had years of practice.
DeleteYour daughter is a beautiful young lady. My son is 46 now and it happened so fast. I went to Mount Rushmore years ago and could hardly believe I was there. I won a book prize at my school when I was 9 years old. It was a book on America, telling about all the historical monuments in the USA.The first one was Mount Rushmore. I still have that book in a box somewhere. Little did I know. Maisie is as cute as a button. And I will be looking forward to those photos. Great photos here today! Thoroughly enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteWould you believe we've been here all these year and last year was the first time we've been to Rushmore? Will not be the last though!
DeleteFirst wonderful photos
ReplyDeleteSecond living in or around a tourist attraction could be both cool and oh so annoying
Mostly cool, mildly annoying.
DeleteCertainty is very dry there.
ReplyDeleteYour daughter looks a lovely woman as it the same age as our eldest son.
Enjoyed all your photos.
We could not have asked for a better daughter.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your daughter! Congratulations on your elk permit.
I do love seeing all the cute dogs, the wildlife there is amazing. Cool capture of the Grouse. Maisie is adorable! Take care, enjoy your day and have a great week ahead.
I flushed that grouse and it landed on the trail in front of me. How lucky was that?!?
DeleteYour tourist area is on our list of places to visit. Maybe we will be clogging up your roads next year. 😁
ReplyDeleteOh dear Lord, not another one! Just kidding, who ever you are I bet you'd love it!
DeleteI live in a huge tourist area too. Maybe the places aren't the big names like your area (which I've visited twice and like quite a bit) but we have lots of lakes and people who or rent places on them. In the winter we have some skiing and I'm only 45 minutes away from ocean beaches so there are those too. The biggest problem in our area is that people from places like Boston came up during COVID and bought affordable places and now all that has driven up a shortage and so prices have gone sky high. At least for homes. And I know about mail not being delivered if the box is too big, but luckily for me it is only about a 5 minute drive. Thanks for sharing this interesting post, and happy belated birthday to your daughter.
ReplyDeleteWe had the same with Denver people, about 6 hours south. Thing as starting to stabilize again although home prices have almost doubled.
DeleteI am fortunate that I live in a part of the country that is not only fly over but drive around. I never see tourists bouncing around or clogging up the roads. About the closest we come is our country has a fall celebration and the county residents, along with a few outsiders who are mostly family, will congregate together. But that might number around a 1000 at any point and it is easily avoidable if you just avoid that one town.
ReplyDeleteSounds like my kind of area!
DeleteHoping you had a great 4th. We have been having a bunch of rain in June and into July. In just a few days we had over 4 inches of rain. But thank goodness, unlike last month where it was almost three weeks of daily rain. So, we are not dry here at this point but like most places, it comes and goes. Thank goodness that there is time for being able to cut the grass that is in fact, loving the rain. lol...
ReplyDeleteI bet your lawn grows practically overnight!
DeleteWhat lovely photos you share! I'd say the biggest change in 250 years is technology, how we communicate, receive information, send information. Enjoy your next adventure!
ReplyDeleteCrazy how it's changed just since the 90's
DeleteHappy 4th of July you guys, hope it wasn't too hot for you. So much wildlife to be seen. Very cool shot of the leaping buck. I figure Barb will be spoiling Maisy rotten for a while anyway. As far as the changes over time that we've seen, it's amazing, almost unbelievable. Have fun on your next adventure!
ReplyDeleteThree other bucks jumped before him giving me time to grab the camera and get ready.
ReplyDeleteYou will be able to count us among those tourists come next fall as we are considering a trip with the senior center which will take us to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone among other places. Hope you had a good 4th of July. Ours was low key and spent indoors because of the heat wave which finally broke today.
ReplyDeleteWhile we love the Black Hills, Yellowstone is absolutely amazing. If you have never been there, you really should take the time to do so.
DeleteLove those pictures of the animals! Look forward to seeing your Elk hanging on your wall. When we went through Laramie back in April, we must have seen over a hundred Pronghorns about 20 miles west of Laramie. When we were in the Tetons, before I broke my glasses, we saw a Moose which was nursing a baby! I still need to do that blog, maybe tomorrow since I have reading glasses now and can see my computer much better. Still awaiting my 'real' glasses though...
ReplyDeleteWhat a sucky thing to have happen while on the road. I hope everything gets back to normal soon. The Tetons are absolutely beautiful.
DeleteGood morning-I enjoyed your post and all the photos, didn't realize you live near Mount Rushmore. My husband had traveled the world and our country already before we met-about 47 years ago now-so never wanted to visit places any more. Several year ago I had mentioned I just really wanted to visit Yellowstone Park-a nearby neighbor who loves to drive-says lets go-I got to visit Mount Rushmore and the Badlands. I enjoyed watching that celebration on the tv-remembering I was there. Glad you were able to get a tag for the hunt.
ReplyDeleteWhile Rushmore is interesting, I favor more nature-made attractions like the Badlands and Yellowstone. Both are incredible, I am glad you got a chance to see them!
DeleteTourist season sounds like pure madness out your way!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at your ‘heck no’ about Rushmore crowds.
The doggie playdate photos are adorable, and congrats on finally getting that elk tag after all those years of applying.
Can’t wait to see what Maisie brings to the mix!
Us either, we pick her up two weeks from tomorrow!
DeleteI would never have thought "tourists" and "South Dakota" in the same sentence, but wow! There is plenty to see in your area. One thing about where I live--no tourists, except for 4th of July weekend, but even that is way less than it used to be as competing events close by have drawn away the visitors. Okay by me.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your next adventure!
I would still like to visit your area some day, it sounds so peaceful!
