I stumbled upon a show on Netflix that I just find fascinating. Not a binge watcher, but one I find interesting if I have 20 or so minutes to kill. It is called the Appalachian Storyteller; you can check it out by clicking this link. The channel has many interesting stories about individuals and families that lived in the Appalachian Mountains in the late 1800's when there was little law enforcement and oversight.
There are so many people in life that I wish I could watch shows about their life stories; my grandparents, my parents or even random people I meet in life. There is a woman we met a couple of weeks ago who is (I was told), the single largest landowner in the county owning thousands of acres. In her 80's, she has an accent, and I wonder what her life story; what has she seen in life? Hopefully these stories would be without the crime, and murder, but who knows?!?!
As a matter of fact, I think we have a storyteller amongst our blog community. Granny Sue has talked about storytelling in the past and probably knows the Appalachian storyteller.
But on with our week. Wet and foggy are the adjectives for week. Basically, zero work done on the garage. As much as we want to make progress on it, a couple of down days with no guilt was kind of welcome. Instead, we spent the week inside cleaning and organizing. I spent several hours out in the shed trying to put that in order. Basically, moving stuff from one spot to another, but it does look more organized.
But look what peaked out from under the hay bales while I was in there!
While the weather did not cooperate, we had a great time. The first night found us gathered around the island testing several very tasting bourbons and telling stories from some of our past adventures together.
One such adventure that Tom reminded me of involved a deer hunting trip in northern Minnesota that ended with my truck on fire and us driving home with the windows open all the way home. Well, "smoldering" would be more accurate than "fire". It all started with Tom and I driving up to the Little Falls area to hunt on a farm of a relative of a friend of mine. Tom and I donned our hunting gear, grabbed out bows and went out in pursuit of the wily whitetail.
After an unsuccessful hunt I went back to the truck, arriving before Tom, to find the truck filled with toxic smoke. I can smell that smell like it was yesterday, I could not even breath as I turned the key on to open the windows and let is air out. Once the smoke cleared, it was obvious what had happened. There was a spotlight on the seat of the truck (a bench seat) and somehow it had gotten turned on as we were exiting the vehicle. Over the next several hours that spotlight burned a hole into the seat. Never catching on fire but melting a hole through the cloth and foam. I was able to replace the seat, but that stench forever permeated the entire interior.
The next day we set out on a jeep ride of some of the forest service roads and a hike. Oh, and what a hike it was! Custer State Park has some of the most beautiful hiking in the country, pictures just do not do it justice, it is something you really have to experience for yourself to fully appreciate.
We had an absolute blast over the two days, so much fun and laughter. They pulled out on Saturday morning and made their way east towards Minnesota. We have to do this more often!
Wow! What is that last bird? I have never seen one like that!
ReplyDeleteThe video made me laugh! They were gonna get that monster, weren't they?
Rain or not, you still filled up the days, as usual! Those fish are beauties, and the visit with friends, what could be better?
I don't know the guy who creates the Appalachian Storyteller videos. He seems to have quite a depth of material. This region is certainly full of stories. Thanks for the shout, Jim!
I guess it is a Summer Tanager. At least one person identified it as that. I think they just pass through as we see them once or twice a year and then they disappear.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you having some fun times, taking a break from all the work. Sounds like you caught a lot of fish. The hike looks great, pretty scenic view! I love the dog and vacuum video. The Western Tanager is a beautiful bird, love the cute Goldfinch too. All the dogs are adorable, my hubby snores very loud. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
I am told that I can give the Frenchies a run for their money in the snoring department as well!
DeleteNo it does not. The birds are gorgeous. The dog din is hilarious. Love the beds stretched out as they are. Life is good!
ReplyDelete5 dogs mean lots of "fibers of love" for us to vacuum up every day!
DeleteStory Tellers ... you're a pretty good story teller yourself. Nice to have fiends stop by and help with some bourbon tasting ;) Custer does look like it offers more than just grasslands to explore.
ReplyDeleteWhy, thank you Jeff! We have more friends stopping by next week so there may be more bourbon tastings in our future!
Deletewe once had a cat that I though we should have called Nature because Nature abhorred a vacuum.
ReplyDeleteIt takes all kinds, doesn't it?!?!?
DeleteSo many people have lived such fascinating lives, we just don't know it. My great aunt is 84 years old and travelled from India to Britain via boat to be a doctor when so many women did not become doctors or sail across the seas. She first became an OBGYN but faced a lot of racism in London and relocated to America. She also changed specialities and became a pediatrician. There in Philly she met again the boy who had proposed to her in India. They both were in their 40's when they were reunited. Both unmarried. I was present at their wedding.
ReplyDeleteOh, the stories that your great aunt could tell! I am happy to read that she met up with the love of her life later in life and got married!
DeleteI am glad to know about this show you found on Netflix. I follow an Appalachian group on facebook and I read some very interesting stories. How nice having old friend visitors and to be able to enjoy such a nice looking hike. Lots of rain and storms around here this past weekend...I sure enjoy seeing the photos of the land up in your area...so nice.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing that our landscape is a lot different than yours!
DeleteHow wonderful to have such good time with friends, despite the weather. It all sounds very good indeed. And yes, story telling is indeed an art. That sounds like a wonderful show.
ReplyDeleteThe weather has cleared, and we have more friends stopping by next week!
DeleteYou do have marvellous adventures!
ReplyDeleteI do not know about marvelous, but adventures we do have!
DeleteHaving grown up in Appalachia, the storyteller program sounds interesting to me. Sometime, we may have to get Netflix so I could see it. Despite the rain, you were your usual busy. Hope it lets up soon.
ReplyDeleteLook on YouTube, there are free episodes on there that you can watch!

ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this one before and it does sound very interesting. I am drawn to the true-life stories, and know some from our own families. It’s been iffy weather here too. I’m glad to see that two of your bunnies survived. Sounds like a successful fishing trip too with impressive looking catches. What a beautiful view across that misty landscape. Wonderful that you got together with your friends and recounting all the great memories. The hike sounded great and loved the photos of the dogs and that video, and those are beautiful birds visiting your feeder. Enjoy your rain free skies.
I wonder if we have any scandalous stories in our family legacies. I shall never know as I do not have the patience to do any research.
DeleteThe hiking pictures from Custer State Park are great. I love those. Great pictures, all of them. Everyone has a story and it's interesting when you hear something really fascinating.
ReplyDeleteYou are right about everyone having a story, mine is not nearly as interesting as some that I have watched and that is probably a good thing!
DeleteI think all of us who blog are story tellers in our own ways. Whether it is about our lives or about other or something going on...And you are right about Custer State Park. I've visited twice and if I ever get back to the Black Hills I would go again. My favorite story is when my daughter was with us and she about 10. One of the donkeys came and stuck his head in the car window and I thought she was going jump out of the car and run into the hills. And I love that photo with all the dog beds and the dogs in them. Have a super week, and lets hope for more sunshine. Erika
ReplyDeleteThose donkeys are not shy when it comes to sticking their heads in car windows and looking for treats!
DeleteNice memories you have written about - good fishing it seems and foggy days too.
ReplyDeleteLove the dogs, always have a friend with dogs around, amazing how they go off at the cleaner.
That vacuum now has several bite marks on it, we typically put the dogs in the bedroom when we vacuum, but we left them out this time.
DeleteBusy, but the good kind of busy. The bourbon flight looks particularly delicious with those pretty glasses. When I see hiking pics in a beautiful setting like you've got it makes me really sorry I can't hike like that anymore. Good luck on the garage build.
ReplyDeleteThis hike was a little challenging, but there are several that are just as pretty and really easy too!
DeleteGood morning glad you could get out and fish-we are in a cool rainy cycle right now. Thanks for the link-I found it on the You Tube channel so I can stream it on my tv. I enjoyed all the photos and seeing all the dogs too-
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think of them. The guys a pretty good narrator and certainly does his research!
DeleteThose Frenchies on the bed are adorable. At least Kayce runs and hides when the vacuum comes out, not sure I could stand that noise! So glad you had rain--we are in that same weather pattern of nice days for a change. It's so fun when friends come to visit! Here's to lots of garage building this week!
ReplyDeleteWe cannot stand the noise either which is why we put them outside or in the bedroom most of the time. Dakota is like your Kayce and hids in the bedroom when the vacuum comes out.
DeleteThey are hilarious pups. Luckily, my dog runs from the vacuum!! I haven't slept with two Frenchies, but I have slept with one small poodle who snores like one!! Nice fish by the way!! My dad would tell us it was good to fish in the rain ... it brought the fish out to bite.
ReplyDeleteI think it has more to do with the change in the barometric pressure, but he was right, it is good to fish in the rain!
DeleteGood morning Jim. I love your foggy day views. The older we get the more we love rainy days or it might just be living in the desert, rainy days are always welcomed. How nice the have the Summer Tanager visit. I have only seen a couple of them…one when we visited Cave Creek, AZ. I agree with Jeff, you are a good story teller. I will have to check out the Appalachian Storyteller’s books. That’s a lot of puppy love at your house…enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was a Tanager, just not which one so thanks for identifying it for me!
DeleteJim and Barb, check out https://www.alasfestival.com/ It is a chance to explore the many different types of storytellers in a beautiful setting.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I took a brief peek at it, will have to look into it a little deeper.
DeleteWow those are some fish that were caught! Fun! Love the fog picture too. The frenchies are so adorable. Good food, drinks and friends! Could life be any better?!
ReplyDeleteWe are hoping to get out on the water later this week as well for a repeat!
DeleteI have no stories to tell. That's why I'm silent all of the time.
ReplyDeleteOh, you have stories my friend, the reason you are so silent has something to do with three words, statute of limitations.
DeleteI will have to check the Story tellers out! Thanks! You had good luck fishing! Oh the vacuum cleaner drives most dogs nuts...that was a great video! How wonderful to have so many dog friends:) :) We had that fog a couple of mornings last week too ...I have heard that means snow in six months...which is November so there ya go!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you used the "S" word in May!!! We are finally going to see some 70's here this week, it has been way too long!
DeleteGood friends will always be good friends no matter how much time has passed since you last get together. Our friends, Sara and David, now live in PA but we knew them when we lived in NJ and it's where Sara and I even attended high school together. Sleeping on the recliner doesn't seem all that comfortable, so maybe the dogs should switch places with you, Jim.
ReplyDeleteVery true about friends! The last three nights I have not resorted to the recliner, but sleep has not been the greatest.
DeleteThe only thing that slows you two down is lousy weather and visiting friends. Those are some nice looking fish! The vacuum video is hilarious, HTDH will love it! The Custer hike looks like fun. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of hikes that you guys can do while you are out here. I have a few in mind!
DeleteFun times with friends! I'm a sucker for those dog shots though, especially the vacuum scene! Taos used to love to "help" Dave also, he tried to pick up the end and we were afraid it was going to suck out his insides! Dogs are nuts aren't they?
ReplyDeleteThere is no help involved with these two. They are definitely in "kill" mode!
DeleteWell what to say, great photos of what seems like a damn good time, when my snoring started to annoy Tim he talked me into have a sleep study done which is ho came to use a Cpap machine but will he see someone about is snoring, nope.
ReplyDeleteHa! Perhaps they make CPAPs for Frenchies!
DeleteI so love taking people on adventures around the Black Hills. My in-laws came once a year and we never did the same thing twice. Of course there needs to be indoor activities as the weather seldom cooperates. Love the birds and bunnies.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many hikes in this area, you could hike every day for a year and not hit them all!
DeleteWow, what a week full of stories and surprises! I love hearing about those adventuresand those bunnies are just the sweetest little survivors. Your hunting trip story cracked me up, that spotlight mishap is unforgettable! I’d love to share more stories like this on my blog. I just posted something new and would be thrilled if you stopped by to check it out.
ReplyDeleteTom and I have many adventures and stories that we have shared over the years. I wish we could get together more often and create more stories!
DeleteMy dog is terrified of the vacuum cleaner. I only run it when he is not in the room because he’s such a nervous little guy.
ReplyDeleteDakota is nervous and leaves the room. The other two, not so much!
DeleteThanks for the bunny update!! Company during iffy weather is when I most appreciate being in the house instead of the RV :-) LOL to your doghouse. You're lucky you get to share their space. Looks like a glorious hike!
ReplyDeleteWe have not seen the bunnies for several days now, but Barb is putting out carrots and they are disappearing!
DeleteGood looking bass! Custer State Park is a place I would love to visit someday.
ReplyDeleteIf you do, look us up we'll go on a hike!
Deleteyou might like "dark winds" also on netflix...a series we have been watching. the birds in your yard are gorgeous, i love that you feed the birds. i got a good chuckle at the video!!
ReplyDeleteI'll check out Dark Winds. I know I have seen it, but we have never watched it.
DeleteLovely photos, looks like a great time at a nice place. I absolutely love all animals and your French Bulldogs are adorable. I know that cats and dogs with the pushed in faces such as Persians, Pugs and the Bulldog breeds tend to snore and snort, but they are so cute.
ReplyDeleteZoey snores and snorts, but Sophie takes it to a whole new level!
DeleteSounds like you had a fantastic time with friends.
ReplyDeleteThere’s something special about good company and great stories—storytelling really is an art. That show sounds fascinating!
We have more friends stopping by this week where I am sure more stories will be told!
DeleteCute doggies on the bed and the colorful birds. The hike and fishing looked fun.
ReplyDeleteBarb thinks you need a couple!
DeleteThis is why I enjoy reading blogs because all of the bloggers are story-tellers of one sort or another (to me). These are journals online about what we do and who we are and sharing that and reading it, is great fun. Happy New Week. Cheers, Ivy.
ReplyDeleteYou are oh so correct!
DeleteA nice visit with friends. Old friends can share some great stories. Love those birds at the end. They are both so bright and pretty. I don't see the yellow birds up here in the mountains. I used to see them all the time in northern California, but we are far up north now, and haven't seen one. I hope the June days are good to you.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
I am guessing you see some birds of the blue and gray variety up there! I remember seeing some mountain jays last time I was up that way!
DeleteIt's good that it rains or snows on you occasionally so you can actually relax. Five dogs would eat a lot of treats! That vacuum video is too crazy! And those were two dedicated fisherman in the rain and hail. Beautiful birds!!
