Just when you thought I said all I could say about our get together last week, there is more. We had one adventure left in the tank so Dino, Steve, Lisa, Barb and I jumped in the Jeep and pointed it towards Rapid City.
What was our destination? Call it morbid curiosity, but we went to The Prepper Show! When we arrived, we were not sure we were in the right place as there were maybe 10 cars in the parking lot. The $10 entry fee had been reduced to $5. We did not know what to expect, but when we walked in, it was way below anything we might have expected.
20 or so tables scattered around the room with maybe 12 vendors. The busiest was a honey vendor selling their goods. The others were pretty much what we expected. Military Surplus, Medical Kits, MRE's (Meals, Ready to Eat), knives. No guns, no ammo, but parts and a holster or two.

We did not have anything planned for supper, remember, everyone was supposed to have left by now, so when we got to the MRE's Barb told everyone to pick one for supper.

There was one interesting vendor that we talked to. Interesting in the fact that the guy was very passionate about what he was talking about. He was pushing a crypto coin called Texit which he claimed will be the currency of Texas in the future. Valued at around $5 now, it will be worth over $80 this coming February and for the minimum investment of $1,000 you can get in on the ground floor! Color me skeptical, but I am going to pass on this one.
Curiosity satisfied, we let without buying anything.
Monday was a quiet day for Barb and I as we sat on the couch and soaked in the silence of the day. Just soaking in the quietness and memories of the past week. We watched a movie in the afternoon, football in the evening.
Speaking of memories of the past week, we had a couple of reminders. When I pulled the jeep out of the garage to go get water I heard a crunch. Alarmed, I stopped, got out of the vehicle and walked around it. Nothing. Weird. I backed all the way out, that is when I saw it.
Some smart aleck had placed a beer can under the tire! (I just looked up the definition of Smart Aleck and yup, it fits pretty well. Noun: an obnoxiously conceited and self-assertive person with pretensions to smartness or cleverness). Upon further investigation, I could see it was a Busch Light. Who do I know that drinks bottom shelf beer? 🤔
I found another one when I went to the bottom cabinet of my tool chest. There was a book in the door of the truck. Dino has written in his blog that he had left a few reminders of his visit, and I guess these are a few. Then when I went up into the loft in the garage, I found his remote-controlled beer cooler tucked in the corner! Bastard! I don't know how he could have climbed those stairs being as crippled as he is. Then, in my processing room an empty beer case! I shall exact my revenge someday, I do not know how, but it will be coming!
Tuesday, we were back at it hard. I had discovered a standing dead tree while walking the property with Dave last week, so we set out to turn it into firewood.
Not to be outdone, Barb found her how tree and set out to cut it down with her trusty DeWalt battery saw!
After cutting it up into sections we started splitting, an hour or so later we had a pile of firewood!
While we were doing that, I was texting back and forth with Chris at the farm. They had just started their chickpeas and they were down a guy as Farmer Bob is on a trip to Germany. He wasn't asking, but he was asking, so I texted him this:
So, we spent the rest of the day packing! This morning, we are starting our journey north. But first a few pictures from the critter cams.
This next one did not come from a trail camera, but it is a critter. A big ugly creepy critter. I hate, hate, hate spiders and this one is/was one from my nightmares. About the size of a quarter, it was perched at the end of our walkway waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting victim, lay eggs in its ears where the babies will eat their victim from the inside out.
One more video (it's a dog video Harry!) before I close this post out, Barb got Zoey some little booties the other day, this is the video of her trying them out!
Our next post will come to you from North Dakota where we will be harvesting chickpeas, maybe a little harrowing, and who knows what else. I know one thing I will be doing for sure, wondering what other treasures Dino may have left for me to find!
It's so funny ... I got booties for Cooper and he acted like nothing ... they didn't bother him at all. Weird. Anyway, love the critter cam, and LOVE my chain saw on a stick. Those things make cutting down trees FUN!! Good harvesting to ye!!
ReplyDeleteThose chainsaws are super handy. Lightweight and always start!
DeleteThat Dino lol I'm sure you are happy to go back to the farm to help and this time Barb gets to go for a bit. Happy travels.
ReplyDeleteWho knows what other Dino treasures await me when I get home!
DeleteGlad you got at least one day of rest! Again, thank you guys so much!
ReplyDeleteExcept for the beetles. Forget the spiders. We are still finding multiple beetles in the camper and truck! Totally freaking me out while driving and I look up and one is over my head! I’m thinking of sending the corpses back. I’m sorry to say this will be majors points off your otherwise 5-star rating. Ps. Love the buck pics on the cam.
Have fun at the farm!
I wonder if there is some way to incorporate those bugs into our meal plan!?!
DeleteThose are nasty little buggers for sure!
Boy! Was that event empty!
ReplyDeleteDino has probably left a few more surprises. Funny guy! But I didn't expect him to part with the remote controller beer cooler!
I had chihuahuas when I was a kid and they walked slower and with each leg going very high when I put booties on them. Somehow they always lost one or two in the snow.
Now--back to the farm for a while--but with Barb this time. Nice!
I am super excited that Barb is joining me on this adventure. Who knows, I might even get her in a tractor or out hunting!
DeleteYou and Dino really have to be on alert when you’re together. Is there anything Barb can’t do? Love that critter cam! Safe travels to N.D.
ReplyDeleteIf there is, I have not found it. Oh wait! Open a jar of pickles. I am needed for something!
DeleteYou are funny! Spiders are our friends!
ReplyDeleteI see the spider have you fooled!
DeleteWe're here in Oregon and the tv has many ads for "prepper" stuff. Three meals a day (plus snacks) to last for 3 months, water systems, etc. We wondered if there was something else going on that we didn't know about. Then we were reminded about the Cascadia Subduction zone situation....ahhhhhh I guess I'm glad we have wheels!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to your "chickpea" chapter, we know nothing about the growing or harvesting but really enjoy eating!
I had no idea what the Cascadia Zone was. Interesting. Let's hope that never happens!
DeleteI'm with you on spiders. I sent the largest one I have ever seen in Iowa, maybe 5 inches in diameter, sailing out of my garage with a leaf blower just a couple weeks ago. I hope he learned his lesson and doesn't come back.
ReplyDeleteI know my spider will not be coming back. Although I spied another one in the gazebo the next day!
DeleteI would find the prepper convention fascinating, glad some of you made the visit. My late partner was a big prankster and was always "leaving behind" things for our hosts to find - yes, there was pay-back! That orb weaver is gorgeous, and such a good helper at any house with flying bugs. I thought it was earwigs that did the egg-laying-in-your-brain thing?! Now those guys are yucky!!
ReplyDeleteNo, I am pretty sure every single spider in the world wants to lay eggs in my ears!
DeleteThe way Zoey was walking, he might have left a can or two in Zoey's booties... I am sure Zoey will enjoy them more when walking in the snow.
ReplyDeleteThey are fur-lined so I am sure she will come to enjoy them.
DeleteI don't mind spiders as long as they stay outside. Wow, the prepper vendors were a bit strange.
ReplyDeleteThe was you decorated for Halloween, I could see you enjoying a spider or two!
DeleteSmartness and cleverness. Pretty much sums up your friend Dino . I would like to meet him someday. Maybe at next year's get together.
ReplyDeleteSend me your address, I'll send him to squat on your property!
Deletealways an adventure around the corner
ReplyDeleteOur next one starts this morning!
DeleteThat is a pretty spider. We saw the prepper show advertised on the news. I thought there would be more vendors than that. Safe travels. Can't wait to see what North Dakota looks like this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI would have expected a few more vendors too. There were generator vendors as well. But no water purification or solar vendors
DeleteImpressive spider description! Yikes. I believe that's a cat's face spider.
ReplyDeleteI just made the mistake of looking up that spider. That's way too much spider viewing for this early in the morning.
DeleteIt's a shame there not many at the Prepper show, $5.00 was reasonable.
ReplyDeleteThe videos are nice and I want to yell timber when the trees came down but of course I didn't.
Have fun with the chickpeas.
We didn't either, we were just glad they fell where they were supposed to!
DeleteI've never heard of Prepper Shows, so thanks for sharing. And safe travels to ND, and don't "work" too hard once you get there.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a mix of work and play. Waterfowl season opens Saturday, pheasant the Saturday after that!
DeleteChickpeas…my favorite! The ultimate prepper food.
ReplyDeleteThey are an interesting legume, it has many more uses than I ever knew about.
DeleteI like spiders because they eat a lot of bugs, but I understand that I'm in the minority.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but they are so scary looking!
DeleteI cracked up about bottom shelf beer. You are SO spot on. Have a marvelous time.
ReplyDeleteI took Dino to the liquor store the other day and showed him where the good beer was. He said he neck hurts when he looks at higher shelves.
DeleteIt's a shame those beer cans were empty. I love the critter cams and your cute dog wearing the booties. My dog we have chewed them off and eaten them. Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteTake care, have a great day!
I think if given the opportunity, Zoey would have chewed those booties to pieces!
DeleteI have heard of prepper shows but as far as I know they are not a thing down here.
ReplyDeleteCool clips and images from the critter cams
A quick search showed an Australian Survival Prepper League. Sounds like a good topic for one of your blogs!
DeleteI love all the fun you guys have. every day presents itself with something interesting. spiders?? 🕷️ I do not like spiders. a couple of bites from a brown recluse is more than enough for me!! took me a year to recover from the bites.. not before eating a couple of holes in my stomach and back. keep us posted on what is next in your fun world
ReplyDeleteSee!?! That is exactly why I think all spiders are evil and want to rid the world of humanity!
DeleteSadie just lays down when Jen puts on those booties. Zoey at least walks around!! Chickpeas...have yourself some fun! Gosh it has been a heatwave up here...86 again today.
ReplyDeleteSame. 80's yesterday and today, but then it starts to get cooler.
DeleteA little disappointed I didn't get to play the chainsaw games ;) always fun to see a tree come down. Have fun with the harvest part deux! Cheers.
ReplyDeleteYou should have stayed another day or two. But then I would have ripped on you for not leaving Saturday!
ReplyDeleteGood choice to pass on the Texit purchase! The prepper show sounds both interesting and odd.I'm surprised it wasn't better attended.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine who would invest in it. I am sure there are plenty who have though!
DeleteNice post... I'm almost at your level :-))
ReplyDeleteGood luck and enjoy harvesting chickpeas... share some photos...
I love chickpeas in my kitchen.
Best wishes to you both.
Hug
We got a couple hundred acres done with a couple hundred to go!
DeleteWho knows how many "treasures" you haven't found yet! Great friends! Way to go, Barb! Came down like a charm. Zoey wears boots like most dogs when they start.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Have fun in ND!! You're definitely a very good friend.
She's a bit chilly up here right now. Down into the 30's has the heater turned on high!
DeleteHave fun on the farm! I am looking forward to seeing what else Dino has left for you.
ReplyDeleteWho knows what treasures lurk around our house. It could be finding things for months!

DeleteOut of curiosity I googled chickpea harvesting.. you learn something new everyday. Nice of you to help out a friend.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to learn something new! It's actually pretty straightforward, about like most other crops.
Deleteooooh man, i am a little surprised about the prepper show, but i am not sure why?!? good thing you did not pay full price!! i think everyone needs a friend like dino...or maybe i should say, everyone needs a friendship like you 2 have!! i love chickpeas, you are a good soul to always be there to help others!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I have ever had chickpeas. I know I've never had hummus. Friends like Dino are like a bad rash, you try to avoid getting it and once you have it, it's hard to get rid of!
DeleteWell shiver me timbers! Barb felling a tree all by her onesie certainly was worth the price of admission! I will likely have nightmares from that spider picture, so thanks ever so much for that, The prepper show ... hmmm, how underwhelming! TG bought about a half dozen MRE's several years ago. They are still taking up room in the back of a cabinet so I rarely see them. The chance of me eating one are about even with the chance that I'd adopt that spider and put a leash on it! Hahahaha xoxo
ReplyDeleteWho knows, from what I understand those MREs last for years! I am with you on the spiders, totally freak me out!
DeleteHi there! I bet you find several more things tucked away in places you might not expect. Our D in L left tiny naked babies in all sorts of knooks and crannies when they visited from South Carolina. You are a great friend to go to North Dakota and help at the farm.
ReplyDeleteOh boy, let's hope we don't find any naked babies in our house, that would be too freaky!
DeleteAnother adventure begins with harvesting chickpeas and it was good of you both to agree to help out. Patrick bought one of those MRE packages recently, but I declined his offer to get me one. He said it was ‘t bad, which to me meant that I was glad to have declined the offer.
ReplyDelete*Not bad" means not good in my eyes. Good job declining his offer!
