It has become painfully obvious (literally) why I am in constant pain. I have not one, but two people out there with voodoo dolls of me manically laughing as they poke needles into me. At least two that have come forward, there could be more.
The first to come forward was none other than Dino, who claims himself as somewhat of an expert in the field. He claims that in order to have an effective voodoo doll one needs some sort of artifact, or better yet, DNA from the person they want to afflict. He then asked me if I remember when Lisa cut my hair last September. He went on to tell me that Lisa had kept some of my hair and given it to Dino for his nefarious acts.
The second person was our not so innocent and sometime wicked daughter in law, Somer who recently tried to blackmail me asking me to send a large sum of money in unmarked bills if I wanted to her stop her sorcery. If you recall, they stayed at our house for almost 9 months a year or so ago and could have easily taken something with them to be used for evil.
But fear not, I will not give into to their demands. Instead, we fled South Dakota westward in an effort to put more distance between us and them. But before I get to that I would like you to meet Jade with whom I had a brief encounter with before we left.
I was at the end of our road when out on the highway what do I see, but a dog standing on the centerline. I get out of the vehicle, and it runs up to me tail wagging like I was a long-lost friend. I have never seen this dog before in my life. I was on my way to town to run some errands and could not live with myself if something happened to it who I later learned was Jade if I did not do something. So, I opened the truck door and invited her into the truck. She jumped right in and sat in the passenger seat like she belonged there. Luckily, she had a collar on with her name and a phone number. I called the number. No answer, so I left a message and thought, "Now what?". She seemed content, so off to town we went!
I bit later I got a hold of the owner, and she asked where we were and she would come get Jade. I told her we were on a road trip of sorts and would be back in about 40 minutes. Judging from her condition, I am pretty sure she is an outside dog. A fact that Barb did not appreciate too much when she saw all the dirt and grime on the seat later in the day. Jade was having the time of her life watching the world go by from the passenger seat.
On our way back home, I called Jade's mom and got direction to their house and dropped her off after our playdate. The woman was thankful and apologetic for her getting the truck all dirty. Upon arriving home Dakota and Zoey were on me like I had a strange woman's perfume lingering on my clothing. Sniffing me as if asking, "What the hell have you been up to?". With a quick treat from the cupboard, all was forgiven and the day went on as though nothing had happened.
And the next day we were off! Camper on the truck, everything packed, we headed into northwest into Wyoming, through Newcastle, Gillette, Buffalo, Sheridan and into Montana. Five hours later we landed for the night in Billings Montana at a new to us brewery. Canyon Creek Brewery. They were a Harvest Host that allowed partons to camp in their parking lot overnight. The only thing was though, when we got inside, Barb and I looked at each other and said, "We've been here before". Perhaps a sign that you have been to too many breweries when you cannot remember which ones you have been to!
They had a nice outdoor patio, so the girls joined us for a beer as well!
Regardless, after a couple of beers and some Nachos from the food truck, we settled in for the night. The next morning we were up with the sunrise and continued on west. Had we planned better, we would have scheduled a stop with some RV friends along our route but we were in too big of a hurry to see of the power of voodoo had a limit. Our next stop was in Missoula which was kind of a repeat from the day before (Big Sky Brewing), beer, Mexican food truck and bed.
One of the things we love about traveling is seeing the scenery along the way and wondering what it would be like to live there. Once in a while, one of us will turn to the other and say, "I could live here". Western Montana is one of those places. The mountains, hills, trees and just the overall feel are right up our alley. I think it is also one of the more expensive places in Montana to live so there is that as well.
Continuing west, we crossed into Idaho, (equally as beautiful) for a total of 74 miles which is all it takes to get across the state on I90. By now we had filled up three times and were having sticker shock with the prices of diesel.
I realized something else about this picture even more significant than the total price. Any of you observant enough to see what it is? The diesel fuel tank capacity of a 2022 Ram 3500 is 31 gallons; we were cutting it close! I sent this picture to a California friend of mine and he said something like, "That is cute, our diesel prices are $2 a gallon more than that well into the mid $7/gallon. I think we have seen $5+/gallon diesel prices 4 times in our lifetime, 2008, '14, 21 and now. What really shocked us though was when we crossed over into Washington where it was $1.20/gallon more less than 3 miles away! While we have seen prices over $7/gallon in some places, we have been able to fill up right around that $6 range.
The other thing that shocked us was the contrast of eastern Washington to western Idaho where it went from mountainous with trees to flat desert just outside of Spokane. This is a new to us route, and did not know what to expect. We did not expect it to look like Wyoming, that was for sure. We spent the night at the fairground in Ritzville, Washington. $20 for the night with no hookups. Nice and quiet though!
As you can see from this picture, we have our trailer with us. An empty trailer. While we are in Oregon we are going to empty Forrest's storage unit in Klamth Falls and bring it back to South Dakota. How it is going to get from South Dakota to Tennessee has yet to be determined. I hate hauling the trailer across the country. We put new tires on it and greased the bearings but even so, I check the temperature of the hubs at every fuel stop. So far, so good.
This terrain gave way to more hilly terrain the further west we went. We got into the cherry and apple growing territory and eventually into the mountainous terrain again outside of Yakima. Talk about some beautiful country! We took US12 between Yakima and I5 spending the night at a scenic overlook along the way. The views of Mount Rainier were incredible! This is someplace we could live!
There are really so many across the country where we have said that. We spent the next night at a campground in Fort Stevens State Park where we walked along the beach with the girls and saw the remnants of an old shipwreck from 1906.
We made it down to the beach okay, but Dakota was struggling so we took a break on the beach and watched the waves roll in.
On the way back, there was a time or two when we did not know if Dakota was going to make it, we lagged behind Barb and Zoey, but in the end we made it back where she laid beside her water bowl and caught her breath.

Good morning guys! Wahoo! Nothing quite compares to beach time and the ocean. We haven’t spent time on the Oregon coast ( just Washington and California). The shipwreck is way cool. Zoey is so cute peeking over the picnic table and poor Dakota. It’s hard watching our pups slow down.
ReplyDeleteThe Oregon coast is our favorite of those states. Quieter, less crowded and absolutely beautiful.
DeleteAwww that sweet puppy needs some TLC!! All that country up north is beautiful, but for the snow part! Isn't this the time of year you want to BE there?? I know that ship wreck well, but I don't think I've seen the tide that far out! GREAT pictures. Dakota needs someone to carry her! Hint Hint!! Don't even get NEAR to California for fuel unless you just won the lottery.
ReplyDeleteI think it is the perfect time of the year to be here. Now or maybe the fall near the beginning and end of the tourist season.
DeleteGlad your trip across the country was uneventful. I always love getting back to the ocean and just relaxing. The crashing waves so peaceful.
ReplyDeleteYou have some great coastal towns up your way as well. We would love to spend more time exploring those.
DeleteWe like the Sandpoint Idaho area and Ten Sleep Wyoming of all the places we have been. My brother still has a home in Oregon so we used to go there often. I love the Pacific and the sound of the waves:) Hope Dakota is doing okay, if she likes icy water fix her up some with sugar and a sprinkle of salt in the water it makes a slush. Older dogs can be a challenge to keep hydrated:(
ReplyDeleteWe've never tried the icy water trick, we'll have to give that a try!
DeleteI love that you are able to go and see the world and enjoy life like you do. That is so cool. I have a nephew, Cobi, he sold his house in Ill. and came back to TN. With money from the sale, he bought an SUV, built a frame and stand for it cause when you lay down the seats it stretches out nicely. Got mattress for it and set off traveling. He has seen more of the US, pretty much every state I think, I love it. I think it is so cool. I missed the fact your son moved out here to TN. You know me, I am totally a hit and miss sort of person when it comes to reading and commenting on blogs. Anyway, where abouts is he? Last yr we had early spring rains, with some flooding. This yr it has come a lot later but as much as we needed it, I would prefer it to come in spurts and not all in one month. It took days of raining for the rain to even break through the hard ground!! Okay, that might be a bit much! lol....Anyway, something I have noticed in the last six to seven yrs. We seem to get so much more wind than I remember TN ever gettings. I need to journal that and see when and how many days that happens.....
ReplyDeleteI am the same with reading and commenting on other blogs. I have the desire, but it is hard to squeeze in sometimes. Forrest and Somer bought a house in what I thought was Jonesboro, but what I have learned is Jonesbourgh. Northeast part of the state.
DeleteI like your traveling style…must make camp near a watering hole! 🍻The Oregon coast is a favourite of ours. Safe travels and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt is important to keep hydrated at all times to avoid cramping. Which really makes one wonder; how in the world does Dino even get cramps?!?!?
DeleteWe love the Oregon coast and plan to spend a bit of the summer there this year. The last time we were at Ft. Stevens we were literally chased out by mosquitos so you're lucky! Oh, I hate to see sweet Dakota laboring. It's hard to watch our loved ones slow down isn't it.... Enjoy the rest of your trip, I enjoy riding along!
ReplyDeleteThere were a few mosquitoes, but very few. I think it still gets cold enough at night to keep them at bay.
DeleteI can never quite appreciate the vastness of your country and the variety of terrain and climate. Beautiful scenery along the way - just stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhen our dogs get to the stage of finding walking sometimes difficult, we use a harness. It goes around the body and has a handle on the top and we can support them along. It's a bit hard on the back (the human's back!)
We've had harnesses for our smaller dogs, but never our bigger ones. I think she would like it, especially when we help her in and out of the truck.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you were able to rescue the dog from the road and take it home.
Except for the gas prices your road trip so far sounds nice. Great views of Mt Rainier.
I hope Dakota is OK. Take care, Happy Tuesday! Enjoy your day!
I think Dakota's long walk days are over. The one to the beach was a little over 2 miles. About a mile too long.
DeleteThat was so nice of you to take care of Jade. Many people just pass on by. It sounds like she really enjoyed your company!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about those voodoo doctors. I live with pain any more; you get used to it, believe it or not. Just another part of life as we aged, i guess.
I once drove across Washington state from Moscow, ID. The moonscape surprised me too, not even green on the River banks! It was a memorable trip. We ended in Bellingham, which was a stunning place.
Best of luck on the rsst of your trip!
I noticed that too, you would think at least the riverbanks would have some green on them. So weird!
DeleteI too like western Montana. I'm just waiting to find out if Mr. Turner left me a portion of his Flying D ranch in his will.
ReplyDeleteI think he would not only have to leave you the land, but also a large trust to pay the taxes on it!
DeleteI am glad that you are finding new nice places you could live. Being one state away makes me nervous you'll pop in or something. Keep going. I hear Siberia is beautiful this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI think we are far away enough at the moment to escape your voodoo sorcery. Maybe you should sell your doll collection next weekend at your garage sale!
DeleteWe were in some of the same places in Washington last year. It was beautiful, but the people who live there say the constant rain and gray days can get to you.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have a voodoo doll here from New Orleans, just waiting for the right person to use it on. :)
I could see that. Everything is so green and lush here. We have only had one day of rain so far.
DeleteThe dog pictures are so much fun. It was nice of you to find Jade's owner and bring her back to them.
ReplyDeleteJade seemed like such a happy dog, not afraid at all, just wanted some scratches.
DeleteHave a blast, Jim.
ReplyDeleteSo far, it has been!
DeleteHaving fun it seems which is so good. Enjoy it whilst you can.
ReplyDeleteBeing able to travel like this is not something we take for granted, we are thankful every day.
DeleteWe visited this area about 10 years ago. Thanks for the memories with your photos. I hope you have a great trip and get some nice weather too-not a lot of rain that area is known for. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful area for sure. While it has been foggy in the mornings, we have only had one rain day so far.
DeleteOh now you've done it! You passed right by Big Timber on I-90 and didn't call us!! We will forgive you--this time! Glad your trip was uneventful--enjoy that Oregon coast--it's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWe were so focused on our mission we did not plan very well! We realized our mistake when we saw the sign for Big Timber and then we looked off to the north and wondered where abouts your place was. We assumed north of town based on the trees we have seen in some of your posts.
DeleteGreat trip. Prayers for Dakota’s health
ReplyDeleteI heard you can break a curse by burning a snip of your hair and a clipped piece of your fingernail. I don’t know if it works though. Prayer works for me
Good luck
That just might be worth a try!
DeleteFuel prices in WA will always be higher due to the ever increasing amount of taxes they charge, that is definitely one thing I don't miss about Washington, however, that drive on US 12 going through Mt. Rainier NP is one of my all time favorite drives, we used to love camping in the park when we had a smaller rig. Not sure how long your trip is or what your return trip might be, we're planning to arrive in Wyoming right around the 1st of July and will be in Wyoming and Montana through early September before we point the truck south. Would love to meet up somewhere along the way if travel plans align.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an amazing trip. Cannot wait to see some pictures. We will be back home by then but if you are in the neighborhood stop by!
DeleteOur diesel is just shy of $6. Jade knew you were good and would get her home. Oregon is more beautiful than I had imagined. Haven't been to Montana yet.. hopefully soon.
ReplyDeleteHow is that even possible? You have been everywhere!
DeleteWhat a fun day for Jade. Our dogs do the same when we "cheat" on them with another dog. Your trip sounds so fun! Thanks for sharing the photos.
ReplyDeleteThe scent was so fresh they swore she was still in the truck and kept running to the door!
DeleteThe west coast is a bit more nutty than the east coast...but a heck of a lot prettier, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteEven these small towns have tent cities and broken down RVs on the streets.
DeleteJade seems like such a sweet dog. Thank you for taking care of her. We lived in WA for 2 years. The rain does get to you but I always said on a beautiful day Western WA is gorgeous! Hey...we saw that shipwreck. Our family and friends all complain about living in WA. Many have moved in the last few years. They headed to AZ, Oregon, Texas and Oklahoma.
ReplyDeleteI can see why, just the amount of sunshine in those other states would be amazing to someone from Washington.
Deletewonderful captures from your trip. as to stray dogs...i wish everyone were as kind as you. i have only been to the west coast once, i really liked it.. the mountains are gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteIt is about as far away from your area as one could get without a boat!
DeleteLucky Jade! I bet she told all her friends about her fun adventure :-) I'm super envious of your travels and your beach time. The Oregon coast is the best place to be in the summer.
ReplyDeleteThese small towns are so cool and it's not super crowded yet.
DeleteI know the feeling of wanting to "get there". Enjoy your travels!
ReplyDeleteI won't be surprised if Jade doesn't come looking for you when you return. Sounds like she quite enjoyed the play date.
She would be a welcome visitor, but I hope not, she'd have to cross a busy road.
DeleteWhat a fun trip! That’s a great state park in WA. Ya the prices in CA are mid $7s. Horrible!
ReplyDeleteCrazy!
DeleteWe will be in Oregon this coming October, but unlike you and Barb, our travel will be on a riverboat as we cruise the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Hope the voodoo does have a distance limit.
ReplyDeleteThe cruise in October should be beautiful! Looking forward to reading about it.
DeleteWow! Just wow.
