There were three things we were most looking forward to
seeing in Newfoundland; whales, icebergs and puffins. All were said to be, not necessarily common, but doable when visiting the coastlines. So far, we have seen none of these. As a
matter of fact when we were on Pilley’s Island the owner of the brewery talked
when THE iceberg was in the area and how they had visitors from all around the
world to see it. It sounds like it is an event, not a common occurrence. Oh
well, at that time we still had over a week left so maybe there is still a chance
to see a whale tail or two and perhaps a colony of puffins!
Our route the last few days |
When the planes crashed into the twin towers on 9/11 all
flights into the U.S. were ordered to land immediately. Well, 38 of them landed
in Gander. A town with an airport big enough for the airliners to land but not
big enough accommodate the nearly 7,000 travelers that were on them.
The community of Gander opened their homes to the
passengers, housing and feeding them for the next four days. There is a book
that recounts the tale; The Day the World
Came to Town.
iOverlander had a great free spot listed just outside of
town at a secluded boat ramp. Plenty of room for one large rig or several small
rigs. Ends up we had the place to ourselves.
Barb and I were in bed reading, enjoying the peace and quiet.
It was 10:00pm and we were just ready to turn off the lights and go to sleep when
our phones started blowing up with texts and pictures from our friends Kevin and Cheryl as
well as Dan and Bonnie back in South Dakota. Apparently they had gotten together and were having a
good time without us! Well, not really without us as they broke out the Jim and
Barb cutouts and were having a good time with us! We had been telling them
about all the rain we have gotten since we have been here and they decided to have a
little fun at our expense dressing our cutout characters up in rain suits and an
umbrella depicting us in rainy Newfoundland while it is sunny and 80 in South
Dakota.
They called a few times over the next hour or so maybe not realizing that we were 3 ½ hours ahead of them, or perhaps they were having too much fun and did not care. I suspect it was the latter. I am sure glad that we can entertain from thousands of miles away!
The next morning we packed up and continued east. Our
destination for the day; Cape Bonavista. But we had several sights we were
hoping to see along the way. We turned off the TCH (Trans Canada Highway) onto 233, then 230 and
eventually 235 to the town of Tickle Cove who was said to have a pretty cool
sea arch. The roads were on the rough side. Not bad if you had a car or even
campervan but I don’t think I would take our setup down there again. You just
have to go too slow. It was worth it though, the sea arch was pretty
spectacular.
Plus Barb did a couple of her soon to be infamous Instagram poses!
We had to backtrack a few miles as we made our way to Cape
Bonavista, Dungeon Provincial Park. They had a lighthouse there that was pretty
cool.
But it what else was there that blew us away….. Puffins!!
Hundreds and hundreds of puffins on a rock island right off of shore. Barb and
I sat there for over an hour just watching them, taking pictures and soaking it
all in. My friend Doug from Wisconsin called the other day and asked me what the
coolest thing we have seen so far in Newfoundland was, and I struggled to answer him. “The
scenery I guess” is how I answered. Had
he called after this stop I would have said “The puffins, definitely the
puffins!” For some reason I am just enthralled with them! Such a goofy looking
bird.
We finally saw one of the three things we were looking for!
Happy, we made our way to the town of Catalina where we parked at the public
library for the night. I was able to connect to their internet and work on a
blog post. Since we got rid of our hotspot, writing and keeping up on other people's blogs while on the road has been a challenge.
The next day we made our way back to the TCH, southeast to
the town of Dildo. I mean, how can you not stop at a town named Dildo?
Especially when they have a brewery!?!?
But wait, there’s more! Not only does Dildo have a brewery and a giant squid, there is also a distillery in nearby Clarke’s Beach. The Newfoundland Distillery makes rum, gin, vodka and something called Aquavit. This is the first distillery we have ever stopped at so we really did not know what to do there. But looking at the menu options they have tastings, 3, 4 and 5, one ounce tastings, just like a flight of beer! Barb opted for the 3 sample tasting while I got the 4. They also provide a tonic that pares well with a particular spirit.
All would have been fine had we not gotten a new server who
uses the 2 ounce measurer instead of the 1 ounce. By the time we left there we
had to crash in the camper for an hour or so before we were off for our next
destination; a road side pull-off just off the TCH.
As we were heading into the St. John’s area we started
seeing a lot of billboards along the side of the road. We had been driving a
couple hours and like a lot of couples who have been married for over 35 years,
neither of us had spoken a word in over an hour as we took in the scenery and
now started reading all the billboards along the side of the road. All of a
sudden Barb shouts “Cold Beer!” Or at least it seemed like she shouted it as we
had been quiet for so long. “What?” I said? “That sign back there said Cold Beer”. Leave it to Barb, of all the
signs we read along the road, she would blurt out that one!
We had reservations at Pippy Park Campground but it was well
before check-in time so we decided to drive up to the Cape Spear Lighthouse
area and check that out. BEST STOP EVER! No, they did not have cold beer but
what they did have was whales!
A pod of probably 10-12 Humpback whales were feeding just
off shore and kept us entertained for over an hour as we watched them surface,
roll, blow and feed just off shore. They were not surfacing real high, maybe a
foot or two but we each took hundreds of pictures hoping to get a few that were
decent. These are some of the better ones.
By that time, it was time to check into the park. We checked in, drove to our loop and saw nothing but classic cars in many of the sites. How cool is that?!?!
While we were in St. John’s we had several things on our
list besides the Cape Spear Lighthouse area. We went to the Quidi Vidi Brewery and Quidi Vidi Village.
I smiled at you visit to Dildo. My father’s family and my husband’s paternal side both came from there.
ReplyDeleteMy mother grew up in a community near Cape Spear and she often stayed at the lighthouse with the Cantwell family who tended the light there for generations.
It is so nice to see the familiar scenes of home. Glad you got screeched in cause now you are cousins. Lol.
Newfoundland is someplace we could see living in another life as we love the water, the outdoors and the cooler climate.
DeleteGreat post! You guys are certainly making the most of your short time there. Those are some cool looking tow vehicles. For those that don’t know Duncan, BC is in our neck of the woods on Vancouver Island. You guys are sure doing a lot of beer tasting without us. 🤣 Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteColibaba’s
Those cars have a long way to travel then! You should find out where they will be staying in early September and see how many made it!
DeleteLove the two ounce pours. That’s like chugging a bottle of NyQuil! Barb could’ve been Carol Merrill’s replacement on Let’s Make a Deal. What’s behind Door #3? A cod!
ReplyDeleteIt felt like we chugged a bottle of NyQuil as we both napped immediately after!
DeleteThat is cool that you saw the puffins and the whales! Those puffins looked so cute! I would have enjoyed watching them and probably would have taken dozens of pictures of them too! I had heard of that town of Gander, had forgotten the name, but had read of their hospitality after 9/11. How cute with your friends to include you in their gathering; great sense of humor you all have!! Beautiful trip you are having!!
ReplyDeletebetty
Oh, there were a lot more puffin pictures that I could have included but as it was I was already overdoing it!
DeleteSounds like a great adventure for sure. Puffins are awfully cute too. Hope the weather holds out fair for you in the upcoming days.
ReplyDeleteToday we had rain, fog and sun. Luckily the rain and fog was while we were driving. Now that we've stopped for the day, it is nice and sunny!
DeletePuffins and whales ... it doesn't get any better than that, except maybe being screeched!! I would have ended up passed out in the truck!! The scenery is amazing ... including the icebergs!!
ReplyDeleteThe puffins and whales were cool to see. You would have enjoyed the Screeched ceremony and could have skipped the rum.
DeleteAwesome scenery. Glad you got to see the puffins and whales. Those humbacks are so magestic.
ReplyDeleteIt was incredible that there were that many whales together. We thought they were more solitary creatures.
DeletePuffins. whales, old cars, beer, rum. Cod and icebergs?!! What an awesome time! Plus your cutouts are having fun back in SD! Barb needs her own show now. Lookout!
ReplyDeleteShe could put on a show about how grandma's should pose for pictures!
DeleteDarn it, that was me right above this. I forgot to change my name. Stupid Blogger!
ReplyDelete-DebbieM
It is so weird how blogger just starting doing that all of a sudden. Maybe they'll fix it in the next update.
DeletePuffins, whales, beautiful scenery, and getting hammered at all the local drinking establishments, you two are having an epic summer... and your friends at home are HILARIOUS! As a chowder aficionado, I look forward to your next report.
ReplyDeleteWe had a seafood chowder the other day that will be hard to beat but we are looking forward to trying!
DeleteHaving spent time with Jim and Diana again I had to wander over and check out your blog - also having seen the shot of the Dildo Brewery as the four of us were entering a local brewery of a less fun name! Looks like you're having a grand time "up there", it's always great when we can check stuff off our lists - Puffins are the coolest :-)
ReplyDeleteJim and Diana are good people. We know so many of the same people it's a wonder we have not crossed paths somewhere.
DeleteToo much fun, just too much fun you all are having...keep enjoying. (When you get back home you can fill a tub, dump in ice, and have a bunch of icebergs!)
ReplyDeleteI did that the other day when filling my drink glass full of ice. I excitedly yell to Barb to come quick and see the icebergs!
DeleteLuv those dog photos! Great photos of puffins and cool whale sightings. As Meatloaf would sing, "2 out of 3 ain't bad." Sue
ReplyDeleteNo bad at all. Especially since we were so close to both of them!
DeleteDid you know Jimmy Kimmel is the honorary mayor of Dildo NL? He was anyway, maybe not anymore lol. We absolutely have to make it to Newfoundland after reading your blog. Looks so nice, except for the rain. We have good friends here that are from Grande Bank that want to show us around. Could be dangerous. Great posts!
ReplyDeleteDave & Leslie
The rain we hit was mostly on the west side. I am not sure if it was timing or if it is usually rainy over there.
DeleteWe did see a sign with Jimmy Kimmel's name on it at the brewery!
Another outstanding post sir! I just don't have enough free time to read them all. I warned you about it earlier and my fears have come to fruition. Jethro and Bambi have hi-jacked your blog. There were 9, count them, 9 references of alcohol and drunken debauchery. I now understand your method of travel. You go to an area, drink the town dry and then move on. Similar to your visit with us. Happy you got to see Puffins and whales. Although I don't think you are a stranger to seeing whale tails. Just saying. Continue the adventure my good people. I can't wait to see what you drink next.
ReplyDeleteYou've taught us well and we've learned from your tuteiage!
DeleteDamn, I did not have my glasses on!
DeleteOr maybe your screen is just dirty and makes the l look like an i!
DeleteWell you haven't learned spelling, that's for sure. I blame the Wisconsin school system. They taught you how to drink from a keg but failed in spelling.
ReplyDeleteLoving all your pics! My bucket list (and associated notes) is growing longer with each of your posts!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to have no problem finding places to boondock even with your rig. You might have to be a little more selective but there are turnouts everywhere!
DeleteHaha, I thought it was great you found puffins and whales, but those Icebergs are the icing on the cake! :))
ReplyDeleteOr the frost on the mug!
DeleteWhat fun you had these last days! Lots of great looking beers (I was partial to the stout pictured) and a distillery tasting. So glad you did get to see the puffin. They don't even look real, more like stuffed animals. So darn cute. Great job with the whale photos. Lot of tales! You can leave happy travelers. My favorite photo...sweet Dakota posing so nicely with her "pals."
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard to get a good photo of Dakota. Whenever we pose he she gets nervous and you can tell she is not happy.
DeleteThe puffins are so goofy. They have these weird beaks and fly so awkwardly.
OMG we are loving this trip! You both sure know how to have fun. Pictures are incredible! I've heard it all now with a town named Dildo LOL!
ReplyDeleteApparently the name comes from the cylindrical pin that holds an oar into it's bracket. Who knew!?!?
DeleteWonderful photo's. Looks like you're having a great time. Those bloody mary's in your cut outs look like a meal. When and if hubby ever retires he wants to buy a trailer and hit the road. I will want a hotspot if that ever happens. I say if, because he's well past retirement age and just isn't ready to retire. Popped in from a mutual blog friends blog. It's always fun to meet new bloggers.
ReplyDeleteWe had a hotspot for many years, kinda miss it now! Hopefully you can talk the hubby into retiring so you guys can hit the road soon!
DeleteThat is so cool to see the puffins and the whales. Wildlife just makes it for me.
ReplyDeleteI would think that you two have seen plenty of ocean-life on your travels as well. There is nothing like have a pod of porpoises following your boat!
Deletei think it may be safe to say that you two are beer lovers?? hehehehe - i enjoyed seeing the puffins, i have never seen such a large group and i have never seen them in flight. oh wait...i have never seen them at all. the lighthouses are pretty, i liked the red one, it is quite unique!!
ReplyDeletei continue to enjoy your antics!!
This is our 2nd time seeing puffins. The first was in Alaska but not this many and not this close.
ReplyDeleteWe do enjoy visiting different breweries and trying different beers. It is a nice break from all the running around we do seeing all the sights!
