Life Without DirecTV

For as long as I can remember we had DirecTV as our satellite TV provider. Well, maybe not as far back as I can remember. I remember TV when I was the remote. My Dad would say "Turn the channel" and I would get up and go through all 5 channels for him. Then we got an actual remote! Ca-chunk, ca-chunk, ca-chunk as it rotated through the channels.

We first remember having DirecTV around probably 1996 and have been a loyal customer all those years. Over the years we have had different accounts taking advantage of the "New Customer" rates which typically last two years. After the two year period you start to see your rates slowly increase from around $50/month all the way up to $170/month which is what we experienced the last few months as  all our deals expire!

When we went to Oregon in May we suspended our account, when we got back in July, we left it suspended to see if I could stand it.  I was skeptical as I really like certain tv and news shows but so far so good. Since getting highspeed internet wired into the house we have been experimenting with different on line apps like Peacock, NetFlix and YouTube and I have been able to find the news programs I want and enough shows we like to keep us entertained. Peacock costs us like $5/month, Netflix came free when we switched out cell phone carrier and YouTube is free as well. So, we are going to cancel our DTV for a savings of $165/month! On top of that our recent switch from Verizon to TMobile saved us another $70/month! Between canceling DTV, our Verizon Jet Pack and switching our cell phone service we have netted a savings of $170/month. We don't get the local news that we want but get enough national news to keep us frustrated and annoyed with politics. Of course when we canceled they offered us the $44 rate for the next 12 months as a "Loyalty Incentive". It took us over an hour to cancel but we got it done.

Thanks to the 7 people who clicked the "Follow" button on our blog, we are now up to 105 followers! Well, we actually got 8 people who clicked "Follow" but one of them was a cheater who clicked "Unfollow" and then tried to time it so they were the 100th follower in the hopes of winning as they put it "A major award" ala the leg lamp from the Christmas Story. I know who the 7th (and 8th) people are but I honestly do not know who the actual 100th is, but I know it was not the cheater DINO!

This week was filled with work and visiting. Our first visitors were two mule deer does and three fawns. Two of them cooperated for a picture while the others were just a little too shy.

On the people side we were able to get together with FT RV'ers Guy and Sue when we went to their campground outside Hill City where they are hosting at one campground and taking care of.....wait for it..... 8 others! Talk about being busy! But for those of you who know Guy and Sue you know Guy cannot sit still. We spent a couple hours catching up outside their rig while Sue registered a couple new campers and Guy sold firewood. We brought Dakota and Zoey but did not take one single picture of our visit.

Later that week we met up with another FT RV couple who we invited over for dinner at our house. Phil and Rudee were FT Rv'ers for a few years, went off the road for several years while living here in Custer and then just this past spring went back on the road fulltime again. They are workamping at the  Crazy Horse Monument for the summer before heading back on the road again this fall.

Not a lot of progress on the house this week. At least not a lot that we can see but we were busy every day. Kevin and Cheryl came over one day and we finished the timber framing of the porch. It was a brutal day for these two lightweights as it was hot. Barb and I both got headaches and nauseated and finally had to call it quits with just one beam left but I was able to finish that the next day.

Now all that is left is to finish the rafters, purlins and hip roofs. Then of course comes the steel, which sadly will take 7 more weeks to get in so that will have to wait for a while.

My entertainment for the week is watching Barb chase Zoey across the prairie. The other day she let Zoey out to do her thing. She puts her collar on and just lets her drag it around as it is a lot easier to catch her when she has her leash on. Well, what Barb failed to see was the deer standing 20 yards away from her when she let go of Zoey's leash....but Zoey saw it and off she went!

For those of you who have ever tried to catch a French Bulldog,  you know these things are fast! There is no way a 60 something year old grandma is going to run one down. Down the valley...through the fence, along the fence, back through, up the hill into the woods....then they were out of sight. Barb said she finally caught her when she was able to grab her leash as she was smelling the ground to see which way the deer went but..... Barb had attached the leash to the ring on her name tag and when Zoey got the scent again.."ping" the ring broke and they were off again! Exhausted, Barb staggered home a few minutes later with Zoey in her arms. Barb had a look on her face that said "I think I am going to die". While Zoey's expression was more like "That was fun, can we do it again?"

In addition to terrorizing the deer, she also terrorizes Dakota constantly pulling on her lips, ears and throat. Dakota takes most of it in stride but once in a while she lets Zoey know who the boss of the house is!

I am choking!
Not only does she terrorize large creatures but small ones as well. There is not an ant, spider or grasshopper within 100 yards of the house that is safe. If she sees a daddy long legs walking across the patio she will slowly approach it, sniff it and before you know it, she will gobble it up and eat it! The same fate has been met by ants and other creatures daring to trespass on the patio.
Even sticks are not safe!

In between Kevin's house building he is helping out a local excavator digging some ponds in a development. We stopped by to say hi yesterday and he asked if I wanted to run the long reach excavator. I could not say YES! quick enough and I was soon behind the controls digging out part of the pond myself!

For now the house work is going to be put on hold as we have two weeks of visitors to prepare for so it is all hands on deck cleaning up and getting ready for company!

  1. We have done without cable since 2012, unless it is available at an RV that we might stay at, and even then we do 'over-the-air' more than not. Watch movies with our Amazon Prime, along with Tubi movies too.

Love those dog pictures...I guess Barb made you delete the pics you took of her chasing down Zoey.

    1. We talked about getting Prime as we use Amazon a lot as well but since we got Netflix for free with our cell plan we just went with that. We do not get any channels over the air so we are kinda stuck with some kind of service.

I wish I did have my camera handy while Barb was chasing Zoey but you are right, my censor probably would have made me delete them.

    1. You are probably our most committed reader, or are you our reader most likely to be committed? I forget, but it is one of the two! Looking forward to seeing you guys as well!

    2. I often wonder the same thing myself!

    3. As far as Zoey running away you should try putting a weight on the end of the leash or something like a boat anchor so that she can't get to far too fast.

    4. Instead of an anchor, how about a school bell!?!?!?

  3. I can just picture Barb chasing Zoey...WAY too funny! Congrats on navigating the DirecTV cancellation process...nothing ‘direct’ about it! We also stopped watching the news, because no news is good news. As far as TV goes, the only thing we care about as seniors is Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Our antenna gets us hooked up with those.

    1. Funny you say that about Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. When we used to visit my dad we had to plan our day around "The Wheel". No matter what we were doing we had to be back in time to watch!

  4. I can't wait to read the 3000 word blog about your electric bill. I am all tingly inside with anticipation. I think a thank you would be in order for getting those extra readers for you.

    1. Why don't you hold your breath in anticipation. It you start to get dizzy and the light goes dim keep holding it, it will be worth it. Ready go!

  5. We cut the expensive TV years before we went fulltime in the RV and still have not regretted it, not even once. Being able to stream video when you want is nice, which is what we do using YouTube or Amazon.

National news is hardly worth watching unless one is particularly happy that day and feel then need to bring there happy mood down a few levels closer to frustration. Seems like the "news" has become one big commentary. They should change the names of their "news" channels to a name more befitting what they have really become. Funny as we travel state to state, the local news has been fun to watch as we get a taste of what is going on around us for a few hundred miles until we move again. Getting Denver news here in Buffalo Wyoming at the moment.

    1. We had never really played around on YouTube but there is a lot of content on there! I don't care where you are on the political spectrum, you can hardly believe anything you hear on the national news as it is so slanted.

We have company for the next two weeks but if you make it over this way let us know and maybe we can meet up!

  6. I too was a remote channel changer but we only had 3 stations. Zoey sure can give Barb a good workout!

    1. Our kids will never understand that, just like we do not understand something our parents and grandparents told us!

  7. I still have Dish. Every time they try to raise the price, I call and tell them I'm going to Direct TV. The price comes down quickly. They are definitely a PAIN!!

That Zoey ... it's funny how they want to eat everything. At 11 years old, I still have to keep a close eye on my Cooper!! The leash is always on .... he's a runner and will disappear in a flash!!! Glad Barb got her back!!

    1. We knew they were going to try and get us to stay and at $44/month it was tempting but we want to try life without it. We can always re-up if we miss it too much.

Barb is going to get a longer leash for Zoey as she now knows if Barb gets within leash length she will be caught!

  8. Interesting that you switched to T-Mobile. It's something we're considering. I'm so done spending the big bucks on cell, etc. Once we move into the house, we'll be changing things up. Still not sure what we'll choose. Keep us posted on T-Mobile and connectivity. Got a good chuckle out of the visual of Barb chasing Zoey!

    1. Barb and I shared a phone under Verizon now with TMobile we have two phones for less than we were paying with Verizon. And Netflix to boot!

  9. Well Barb you are also saving money with your exercise program ... chasing Zoey. lol We have not renewed our satellite service with the MH either. We found with the trips this summer as long as we had good wifi, we could stream most things we wanted to watch. We do have cable at the house though and a DVR taping. lol so we are cheaters. :)

    1. No need for an exercise program out here, we always have something to keep us busy. Looking forward to the day when we have nothing to do!

We did have to give up the DVR and we do miss the ability to record programs but we are adjusting.

  10. We only had satellite at the ranch a few years and Steve brought it along in the trailer but we never watched it. Sold it right afterwards. We use Netflix. It cracks me up that even though I was a computer programmer back in the day, all these new famgled viewing platforms confuse the heck out of me!
    Run Zoey, RUN!

  11. Good thing you researched the TV/Internet connection prices. I think we are all paying way too much for what it is worth. Especially if one does not live in the city where you can get cheaper prices and have more options. We only have TV over the antenna and do streaming over the Internet. Don't know yet what we are going to do once in a campground in the USA. We have a good antenna, but channels are still limited. Cable sucks!

    1. We had about a dozen channels that were our favorites like the home improvement shows, vet shows, cooking shows but we have found alternatives in other areas.

  12. Not sure I could cancel Directv as long as we are still traveling part time. But once we decide to stop, we'll probably get rid of it and just use streaming services. Love, love, love the dog photos!!! What a cute pair:) Glad Barb was able to catch Zoey. Enjoy your company!

    1. I was skeptical but have now found that there are numerous streaming services that allow us to enjoy 90% of the shows we used to watch. Barb has yet to find a replacement for her vet shows but hopefully we will find that soon as well.

The dogs are having lots of fun together, Dakota has never been so active and playful!

  13. I've never been a big TV watcher, but nothing sucks my good intentions away like Youtube. I could have the best of intentions, but 2 minutes on youtube will quickly turn into 12 hours. "What? A video of a cat on a trampoline?? Tell me MORE!!"

  16. I see a new blog in the making "The Adventures of Zoey". Just tie a 6 or 8' rope to the end of her current leash. The weight might slow her down a tad and is easy to step on to stop her.
