Let me start by saying Florida is one of my favorite places to visit in the winter. I say "winter" because I have never been here in the summer or fall, or spring for that matter. But it does have some oddities.
For one, it is the flattest state in the country with the highest point being only 345' above sea level with the average elevation being only 100'. Back home our house sits over 4,900'.
Did you know that Florida is the only state in the country with a wild monkey population? While none of them are native, there are 5 different breeds of wild monkeys in the state. Most likely escapees from homes, movie sets or maybe......some infectious disease lab.
Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist. Yup, nowhere else on earth do these two reptiles live in the same habitat.
But my favorite Florida oddity is that there is rumored to be over 2 trillion dollars of lost treasure in the ocean off the coast of Florida. Think about that next time you are snorkeling!
We did see some oddities of our own this week while we were in Fort Myers. You ever been to Fort Myers Beach during spring break? While it was not officially spring break yet, there was enough activity for us to see some pretty interesting sights! If I were to be honest, both Barb and I snuck a few pictures and sent them to some friends back home, but they certainly would not be acceptable here on the blog.
We visited my sister Judy and Mike for four days. One of the nice things about visiting her, is that we can stay right in their driveway!

The first night we got there we headed to the beach area for supper at Doc Ford's where we feasted on meals of a seafood variety. Both very good.
The next day we started the day by going to Red Horse Distillery. We took a tour and tasted just about everything they carry. I have to tell you; this might have been my favorite distillery tour ever. Pretty much a one-man show. The owner was really interesting to talk to. His spirits were very good too. Between the 4 of us, we came home with 8 bottles.

After that, we went to the beach proper and took in the sights.
We met several of Judy and Mike's friends there. Let me tell you, the Rum Runners they serve on the beach are potent! The people watching was over the top. Barb and I went for a walk on the beach, and I took a couple of videos to give you a taste of what it was like. Yeah, I was that weird old guy videoing on the beach!
Monday was a very special day as it was Barbie's birthday! We celebrated by going to a local brewery and later in the day, ordering in Chinese. Of course, we had cake for dessert and sang her happy birthday.
Our last day there we went to the 6-Mile Cypress Slough where we walked the 1 1/2-mile boardwalk.
Lots of wildlife and cool scenery. While most everything I recognized, I did have to look up these first two pictures of the Mangrove Snapper and the Wood stork.
That night Mike and Judy made grilled grouper and tuna steak. While both were good, that grouper was to die for!
The 4 days went way too quick. Lots of laughs were had and several dollars exchanged hands during our evening dice games. We only get to see them once a year or two, so we had to make the most of it.
We pulled out Wednesday morning exhausted but with smiles on our faces. So good to see them! Do you think we took a day or two to relax and recoup? If you know us, you know the answer is no. We drove straight to Punta Gorda where we met up with a former coworker of Barb's and her husband. Shirley and Al have been coming down here for years and know all the good spots to eat. This year they picked Laishley Crab House. We got there a little early, so we took the dogs for a walk along the docks where there was evidence of the most recent hurricane.
Today was another special day as it was Shirley's birthday! We had a great supper, visited and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. If you look in the background of the picture below you can see that boat sideways on the dock.
We spent that night in Port Charlotte and the next in Chiefland, which was our first day in quite a while where we did nothing but drive. Our next day brought us to Panama City Beach, not exactly on our way but worth the detour. We stopped and saw some of our Wisconsin friends who stay down there for the winter. Mike and Jan lived just down the lake from us when we lived in Wisconsin. Upon entering their place, I walked directly to the windows. I actually did not want to, my body just did it on its own. You would have the same reaction if you saw their view.
Right on the beach and facing west, their views are incredible! I could have sat out there for days and just taken in the sights. They said it get pretty crazy there during spring break too, although their busy time is not for another week or two.
We went to supper at Triple J's just down the road and I have to tell you, I think that was the single best meal I have ever had at a restaurant. Steak Orleans; a filet with a crab cake. It was their special that night and is not on the menu, but if you go there and they are serving it, you will not be disappointed!
Our plan from there was to drive up into Alabama to visit more friends but something came up that diverted us. Well, a couple of somethings. We found a couple of boats that we are going to look at; one in Missouri, one in Nebraska and one in Wisconsin. Two are on our way home, the one in Wisconsin, not so much but we will drive up there if need be. We are currently in Alabama where we spent the night at a Camping World which provided free sites to Good Sam members on a first come first serve basis.
One last oddity, Barb and I were talking the other day about wills, medical directives and such the other day. When I told her that I wanted to be cremated, she made a note and said "okay". That is not the odd thing. The odd thing is that I overheard her on the phone talking to a crematorium setting up an appointment for next week!
That's it for this week, who knows, next week could have a picture with our truck pulling a new (to us) fishing boat!!!!! Or perhaps Barb with a picture of an urn?!?!
Happy Belated Birthday wishes to Barb...You both amaze me with all the energy you have. My family LOVES Panama City....We have made so many awesome memories on those beaches. I think you should consider writing a book about your travels and all of the distilleries you have visited. Safe travels...
ReplyDeleteI am glad this post could remind you of your times in PC. As for the book, I do not have the skill or patience to take on such an endeavor. But I do enjoy writing the blog!
DeleteSounds like fun times visiting and exploring Very awesome views for sure i could sit there for hours and listening to the ocean
ReplyDeleteJust the sound of the waves hitting the shore are soothing enough to relax someone and put them to sleep isn't it?
DeleteOkay, that last bit made me almost choke on my water! I hope it's the fishing boat that turns out to be true, and not the other option!
ReplyDeleteThe color of the water is just unbelievable, especially to those of us looking at mud. And snowflakes. And mud rain. I think I would very much like that walk through the swamp, just my kind of thing.
Barb looks younger all the time. I think her birthdays must go in reverse!
Safe travels, wherever you end up.
Wouldn't that be something if birthdays really did go in reverse at some point?!?! I think I would settle around 40 something if I could pick an age to live again or live permanently. I too am hoping for a boat picture next week!
DeleteSuch awesome pictures! Y'all know people everywhere, it seems! Haha! That's awesome. Happy Birthday to Barb! Glad y'all could celebrate with your brother and sis-in-law. Awesome wildlife pictures, too. And I can just imagine what you saw at Spring Break! HAHAHAAA!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a distillery opening up about 20 miles west of where I live on the Mississippi River. I hear it may be a couple years before they have their own bourbon ready, but check out Rosedale someday! https://rosedaledistilling.com/
That looks like it is going to be quite the distillery! So much time, money and knowledge is needed to take on an endeavor like that. Most, if not all, distilleries have to source whiskey and bourbon from other sources until their own is ready for sale. Usually 3-6 years.
DeleteI love seafood and we don’t get much here in AZ! Sure made me homesick. I love the weird facts…and I’m really glad I never came face to face with one of those monkeys. I have always been a little scared of monkeys and not sure why. And I agree…sitting on the balcony of those high rise condos is quite relaxing.
ReplyDeleteMonkey's kind of freak me out too. While we have seen them, we have never seen them up close. Those little buggers are so strong, they could rip your face off with no effort at all!
Delete"...snuck a few pictures and sent them to some friends back home, but they certainly would not be acceptable here on the blog..." When I lived in Arkansas that was a normal trip to Walmart, though the pictures YOU took were a bit more "Eye Candy" that the ones I saw in Walmart. Where we live in Florida we don't have popular beaches near us...but the trip to the Winn Dixie for food and supplies is a bit more pleasant, if you know what I mean. Glad you had a good time in the land of sunshine!
ReplyDeleteWe were in a Walmart in Panama Beach City at about 10:00 at night the other day. Let me tell you the people that come out at night in that area are certainly different than the ones you see during the day! It was like we were in a different city altogether!
DeleteHappy birthday to Barb!!
ReplyDeletePunta Gorda! When I was a kid we visited somebody in a new housing development there. The bugs were so bad the mom walked through the house with some kind of bug spray and the carpet was black with dead bugs--flies, I think. They said they hadn't gotten the bug spraying arrangements for the city yet...I overheard the grownups talking.
In a fairly large group (four families, I think) we went out in two big motorboats early one morning to go down the coastline to the Florida Keys. Saw dolphins and stingrays, I remember. Ended up on an island for most of the day...saw a scorpion.
I guess we stayed too long. On the way back one boat ran out of gas! All the women and children and my dad and another dad stayed on the stranded boat while the other boat with a couple of dads went off to get gas. It was already dusk so one dad had to ride on the front of the boat to look that they didn't hit rocks or run aground. Well, they never came back--lol! The coast guard finally came and found us! Here that boat ran out of gas, too!! (Not the smartest adults, eh?) The coast guard found them and then came to find us. We got back to the dock about 2am. We were written up in the Punta Gorda paper--all about how these (dumb) families got stranded in the Florida Keys. I just remember being the only kid still awake in the dark...listening to sounds of animals on the island rustling through the brush. One of the moms said it was probably just wild boars.
Punta Gorda Florida--goodness! I haven't thought about that adventure in years!
Oh my gosh, you have quite the story about that area! How old were you then? I am guessing things have changed quite a bit over the years. Except the bugs, they are still there, but not in those numbers.
DeleteThis was back in the late 50s or early 60s. Was memorable, that's for sure. My dad and I were sitting at a picnic table on that island when right between us a scorpion climbed up around the middle of the end of the table (they can climb upsidedown!). My dad just said quietly--don't move. We had our arms on the table and sat very still while it marched slowly down the center of the picnic table and around and down and out of sight on the other end. Then we both leapt up and went and stood in the water for a long time until our hearts stopped racing.
DeleteHad no idea about the monkeys, nor the elevation of that State, it's interesting.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Barb, another one!
The videos are good for me to see, long way to the sea compared to what we are used to.
Gorgeous views as well and lovely photos. Thanks for sharing.
The build most of the beaches around here but using giant suctions hoses way out in the ocean, pumping the sand to the beach and then filtering out all the seashells. They do this pretty much after every hurricane as it gets washed out with the waves and wind.
DeleteWhile the beach pictures were good, I loved the swamp pictures. However, if you had included the spring breakers, I might have changed my mind. :)
ReplyDeleteYou should have seen us sneaking pictures of the spring breakers. Barb and I would pretend to take a selfie when in actuality we were taking pictures of the person in front of us. We were laughing our asses off at our creativity!
DeleteSounds like you enjoyed FL to the max, good eats and good bourbon. Happy Birthday to Barb and safe travels back to the land of Brrrr.
ReplyDeleteThe food down here was fantastic! There is no place at home where we can get meals that can compare to there.
DeleteI didn’t know about monkeys in Florida or the croc/alli mix either. Nice humourous conclusion. Keep on trippin.
ReplyDeleteI knew there were wild monkeys in some areas. We kayaked the area where they made the Tarzan movies and saw them there. It is rumored that these escaped during filming and were never recaptured. More than likely, they just left them there.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI have seen both the crocodile and alligators in Florida and those wild monkeys spooked hubby and I we had to back up and get away from them. I love Florida seafood, the grouper is yummy. Happy Birthday to Barb. Good luck on buying the boat. Safe travels. Take care, have a wonderful day and a happy week ahead.
I don't think we have seen any crocs. But then again I have never looked at any of the alligators we saw close enough to tell if they were anything different. I think that is the first time we have had grouper. I have now had it three times, none of it were as good as what Mike made on the grill.
DeleteThat walk looks great. I'm always amazed by all the animals there are in Florida since winters here in NH are pretty quiet except for a few deer and birds. and a new boat. I won't mention that to my husband since he might be jealous. Grin. And wild monkeys in Flroida? I didn't know that. Wish a Barb a belated happy birthday. Her's is the day before mine, so we early March born people need to stick together. Good luck with the boat hunt and have a good week.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated to you as well! If you want to send me your husband's email address, I could send him all sorts of boat ads so you too could enjoy days in a boat this summer!
DeleteI think the better title of your blog should have been this, "Florida attracts weirdos". Then your picture would fit in perfectly. I don't believe that tale you spun about 4 people going to a distillery and leaving with 8 bottles of booze. I think they were just there to help you carry your bottles.
