More like moan and groan than ouch, but there were a couple of ouches during the week as well. Both Barb and I (and Forrest) have aching bodies from working on the garage. But we made some great progress!
The pile of lumber that we had delivered last week is now 2/3rd gone and built into actual garage walls. Kevin came over last Sunday and helped us lay out the plates. Laying out the plates is basically marking the bottom and top boards, so you know where to put each of the studs. Typically, 16" apart, this is so you have a board every 48" or 96" so your sheeting seams hit on a stud. There are other studs too, such as corners, intersecting walls, windows and doors.
Kevin, being a fulltime contractor can lay out buildings in his sleep. Us, not so much. What would take us a full day (probably with a few mistakes), he can do in an hour. So, he was nice enough to come out and lay them out, marking where each stud should go accounting for the length of the wall, windows and doors. That day, he did two walls: one 48' long wall and the 24' west wall. This would be enough to keep us busy for a few days as we built them. Which is what we did on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday, we built the 48' north wall. The first step was to cut all the studs to 10'. Did you know that a 10' 2x6 is not always exactly 10'? They will be anywhere from 10' to 10'-1/2" so you have to make sure they are all exactly the same size. To do these two walls we needed about 60 studs. Once those are cut you lay them out on the ground, standing on edge with the green treated board on the bottom and the top plate on top. You lay each of the studs at the mark Kevin had made on Sunday. This particular picture is where an interior wall intersects, thus the additional boards.
Then you nail the studs to the bottom and top plates. Somer even came out to help nail in a few boards!
It was a beautiful day, and we only had one minor incident when I tripped on a stake and took a tumble. Well, it was more like 3-4 stumble steps before I fell, then the fall and a roll down, where I lodged against a tree. I laid there for a few seconds taking inventory of what hurt the most before I struggled to get up. Somer was fortunate enough to witness the entire thing, Barb had her back turned. The only damage was to my pride and my shin which got scraped up. That was my first "Ouch" of the week.
Our next "Ouch" came the following morning when we were getting out of bed, Barb and I were both moaning and groaning from the previous exertions. We sucked it up though and went back to work building the shorter 24' west wall. Luckily with no additional "Ouches".
Once that was done, Barb and I went shed hunting (hunting for the shed antlers the elk and deer dropped in the last few weeks). We went over near the area where Barb shot her elk last falls as we knew there were a lot of elk in that area. That is where we both experienced our next "Ouches" for the week. We covered some terrain that was way beyond our physical abilities. I like to think we are in pretty decent shape, but we got our asses kicked. Up and down the ridges. It was the ups that kicked our butts.
What a beautiful day though, 70 degrees and sunny! Did we find any antlers? Just one, a decent whitetail antler.
Speaking of being physical, Barb and I both had our annual doctor appointments this week. Barb came home with instructions to monitor her blood pressure for the next week as it was higher than they like to see it. My appointment went fine, they asked all the usual questions; "Are you feeling depressed, are you generally happy, do you have thoughts of hurting yourself...... But there was one question that made me pause; "Have you fallen in the last 30 days?". I thought about it for a millisecond before responding "No". I did not need some minor trip being on my permanent medical record!
When I got home, Forrest and I loaded up the boat and headed 40 minutes south to the Angostura Reservoir, the only open body of water in the area. We spent 6 hours on the water half of which I played with the electronics getting familiar with them and the other half fishing.
What a beautiful day, 84 and sunny! So hot in fact that shirts were coming off and sunburn was setting in. While we did not catch any fish, we had a great day.
While Forrest and I were fishing, Barb was back home cutting more studs and putting sill seal on the bottom plate.
Friday was a wall raising day! Kevin brought his skid steer over with the boom, Dan and Bonnie came over to help and along with Barb, Forrest and I we were ready to lift some walls! I was skeptical lifting the 48'er, but Kevin knew what he was doing and within 5 minutes we had it standing! We spent the next 45 minutes bracing, drilling concrete anchors and leveling every up.
The 24' wall was next. Again, we leveled, braced and drilled. Kevin still had some time left, so we quickly laid out, built and raised the 24' east wall. Just like that we had 3 walls up!
Before he left, Kevin laid out the plates for the 48' garage door wall. Barb, Forrest and I got busy building it after he left. We still have the large headers to put in, but that too will soon be standing, and we will be ready for the trusses!
We paid for it the rest of that night and the next morning though as our stiff and tired bodies questioned what we were doing to them. The hot tub felt great that night!
Saturday, rain and snow greeted us as we woke up. Three days with 70 and higher followed by snow. Welcome to spring in South Dakota!
Our niece Alana and Ryan came over on Saturday along with Sophie and Loki for a doggie play day. We were forced to stay inside as it was wet and muddy outside. Oh boy, we had a lot of catching up to do after a 3-month absence. They are building a new house that should be done in the next month or so. We chatted, caught up and of course played dice games. For each game the winner won the money, and the loser had to take a shot. Forrest won 4 times out of 8 games; I lost 5 times out of the 8. Barb added a new element to the loser called The Shot Wheel. The loser had to spin the wheel to see what shot they were taking.
No post is truly complete without a few dog pictures. This is my view when I am eating a Rice Crispy bar.....
While we don't have it on the calendar yet, with luck, next week's post will show some trusses on the building and maybe even some sheeting!
Looks like you are building your own personal Village.
ReplyDeleteStay Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
It seems like we never have enough storage, hopefully this will put the end to it.
DeleteEnjoyed the videos, many hands make light work and the shed it seems will be ready for use in no time at all. Well done to all.
ReplyDeleteAlways love to see the dogs, were those two drooling as you were eating.
The dogs are my biggest fans when it comes to me having something to eat. Otherwise, they could care less, unless of course one of us mentions the W A L K word.
DeleteSo glad you included the videos! Wow! That is going to be one nice big garage! No wonder you were stiff and sore. I am stiff and sore every day and have done no work like that at all--ROFL! Love seeing the pups, of course. :)
ReplyDeleteSo, you are saying I have something to look forward to! We built the garage larger than we needed, but I am sure we will have it filled up in no time!
DeleteI'm impressed with how quickly you got your walls up. If the rest of the construction goes that quickly, you have a place for your boat in no time. However, the real question will be to see if you body can survive.
ReplyDeleteRest assured, the rest of the building will not go as quickly. We need our pocketbook to catch up to our spending so it will be a month or three before we can afford the steel for the outside.
DeleteYou had yourselves a modern day barn raisin'! I mean, not a barn, per se, obviously but that's just semantics :). Glad no one got hurt and instead you guys got good work outs. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteIt was a barn raising of sorts. So nice of everyone to come and help. Hopefully the rest goes as smoothly!
DeleteYour weather is looking a lot better than our weather, and you are accomplishing a lot. I hope you don’t get too ouchy this week.
ReplyDeleteWe are catching back up to you the last few days, snow, rain, snow.... for the next 7 days. Mother Nature is such a tease.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing you and Barb, keep on working with all the aches and pains. It is the only way things get done, you have to keep moving. The walls are going up fast.
I love all the cute doggies, great photos. Take care, have a great day and a wonderful week.
If we did not work if we had any aches and pains, we would not get any work done at all!
DeleteIt's amazing how fast a building can go up! Great job! And glad you "ouch" wasn't serious!
ReplyDeleteIt is, the framing seems to go quick, then it slows down at bit as we do the soffit, facia and other finishing touches.
DeleteSuch great and wiling friends! That indeed was a lot of work. Looks like you'll soon open oe of those bottles to share and laugh about the garage raising.
ReplyDeleteSadly, none of these friends are bourbon drinkers, beer for them. But being it was daytime, during working hours, it only cost me a couple of Diet Pepsi's!
DeleteI would have to say that instead of a village, it looks more like a compound. Didn't the Branch Davidians live in a compound? Makes me go hmmmmm........ Will you ever rest? I, on the other hand like to explore what is on TV. I watched a movie just last night called "Bigfoot-The Movie". I don't highly recommend it. But there is a sequel to it now that I am vested into it. It's called "Bigfoot the Movie: The Sequel".
ReplyDeleteNext time you visit, you might not want to drink the Kool Aid!
DeleteTo me, that is a huge garage you are building. Sorry about the ouches, but nothing serious got hurt. And of course, the boys go fishing while Barb is left with the work :-)
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, she was invited fishing but thought work was more important. At least one of us has their priorities right!
DeleteBeen there, done that. I'm impressed that you didn't hurt yourself. The second day is always the worst! It sucks getting old!! Things hurt a lot more when you're old!
ReplyDeleteHang on, it is still early in the project. Wait until the end before being impressed.
DeleteLove the pictures of your fur babies. Bless your hearts...(this is what we say in the South) Even a small tumble can throw our bodies into several aches and pains. Hope you all have worked those out. The garage is looking good...I know your freezer is full of fish from Alaska...but you're fishing more..lol..
ReplyDeleteIsn't that what they say when they are really trying to insult you? You are correct, we do still have quite a few fish in the freezer, but there is room for more!
DeleteYou are becoming a carpenter! Since we built our own home, I know a bit about laying out stud walls, my baby brother and I laid out my nephews garage about a year ago...fun stuff and a great accomplishment when the walls go up!! That will be a really nice shop when done...brings back memories when son in law, Far Guy and I built his equipment shed...the rafters were a real treat with just the three of us...the guys on ladders and me on the ground with a rope on the center of the rafter...we got er done! Happy Building! Fun to see the dogs...they are looking good:)
ReplyDeleteYour building career sounds a lot like ours. Few people, hard work and great satisfaction. Although, we hope to have 4 people while doing our trusses.
DeleteLOL at your next ouches coming from getting out of bed!! Your changing temps sound like our Spring - clear from the changing wardrobes over a few days :-). Having an experienced builder lay out and label has to make for a much better experience, another great "know a guy" for you and Barb! The doggies are too cute and the best part of any day.
ReplyDeleteHaving the plates laid out was a life saver and really sped us up. So thankful to have Kevin to help us out!
DeleteThat’s beautiful looking country on your shed hunt. I guess you need Barb along if you want to catch fish. 😉 You guys are so lucky to have so many great friends willing to help with your builds. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteFinding an antler is just a bonus. The real reward is getting out there and seeing the country.
Deleteyou sure are lucky to have friends who know their trade and are willing to help. you have very kind friends!! the hubs and i enjoyed the videos....we were in construction for many years, site work and underground utilities, so he knows how difficult it can be. more importantly how difficult it can be to get good help. we have built many pole barns with the help of the mennonites in pa.
ReplyDeleteIt bet that video brought back memories of past projects for you two. I am hoping this is our last project, we are getting too old for this stuff!
Deletethecontemplativecat here. I felt your pains, falling, and determination. Been there, and done that! Tylenol/advil/aleve might have helped but only time makes the soreness go away.
ReplyDeleteThe ibuprofen bottle has been getting a workout this week!
DeleteI wouldn't have said I'd fallen when the doctor asked either. I think a trip doesn't count. Nor does a slide on ice. If you can get into and out of a boat your balance is fine. Isn't that what doctors look for? And that is going to be a nice big garage. Good for you for taking on such a big project. Loving those photos of the pups. They look like they love their beds. Only one of mine likes a dog bed, but he sure loves his dog bed. Have a great week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you think! If I had a balance problem I would probably mention it, but I can put my socks on while standing up still. Well, most days at least!
DeleteYou know better than to go fishing without the queen there to show you all how it is done...
ReplyDeleteReally? That is what you got out of that post? That Barb needs to go fishing with me in order for fish to be caught?!?!?!
DeleteLooks like you made good progress. I was at your end of the hills on Thursday and it was beautiful. There is still snow here in the north. Glad you got a little snow. Good luck with the garage raising. Hope you don't get too sore.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do wish we would get more moisture, at other times we do enjoy being in the banana belt of the hills!
DeleteNo wonder you hurt! Nice to have such a capable crew, looks like it all went well
ReplyDeleteThe fishing sounds like a great break, but poor Barb, nack there working!
We had similar weather but today had some nice showers...and no snow, thank goodness.
Showers sound nice, we could use a nice downpour here!
DeleteOh boy how I wish Barb had your tumble on video! Glad you weren’t hurt badly. Farage is looking good! What’s going in it? What’s in the Barndo garage?
ReplyDeleteWhat a gruel sense of humor you have! The Barndo garage will be the home of our RV, whatever it may be, one side by side and both vehicles. The new garage will only have the boat in it for now, but I am sure we will find a way to fill it up!
DeleteWow, you guys got a ton done! Sounds like a rough week for the muscles (and your pride 😆), but that garage is really coming together. Hope the hot tub helped, and can’t wait to see those trusses go up!
ReplyDeleteThe hot tub is a God send, we hit it almost every night, the perfect relaxer before going to bed.
DeleteWhen I saw that first wall framed out and laying on the concrete pad, I thought you were crazy or had an army at your disposal because it would take that to lift a wall that long (built with 10' studs) into place. Turns out you weren't crazy and didn't have an army but instead had a friend with a skid steer and boom.
ReplyDeleteI was right there with you when Barb and I were building that wall. In fact, I called Kevin up and asked him if I should split it in the middle, but he assured me that we could lift it in one section.
DeleteLove reading about your hunting exploits, even if they only involve antlers. The pup photos are great. Always a favourite. That is going to be a great garage!
ReplyDeleteHunting is in our blood, whether it be deer, duck, antlers, or even bourbon. He just enjoy getting out there and searching for something rare or unusual.
DeleteBe careful out there. No more falling down.
ReplyDeleteAwesome on finding the antler.
The dogs are so cute.
Deal, I will do my best!
DeleteAgain I have to take a nap after reading your blog post. Haha! Great work on the garage. Nice to have the extra help. Glad you weren't hurt from your fall. I so understand falling. Had a good laugh at the dogs in your face as you ate! Very nice dog photos. I'd have to get a treat bag to hang on a belt with all those dogs.
ReplyDeleteThat treat bag would not last very long, you would either run out of treats or get tired of dogs always in your face. These dogs are relentless when it comes to food!
DeleteYou folks are amazing work horses!
ReplyDeleteSome days are better than others, but we try to make a little progress each day.
